Key Summary
About: The BEng in Materials Science and Engineering at City University of Hong Kong trains students to develop and select materials. The programme covers construction, biomaterials and energy materials, includes AI-assisted material development and industrial internships for hands-on experience. It's the first materials degree accredited by the Hong Kong Institution of Engineers.
Career Outcomes: Graduates can join the Hong Kong Institution of Engineers as graduate members and qualify as engineers after training. They work in electronics, plastics, metals, ceramics, construction and testing labs as quality control, R&D engineers or materials scientists, or move into manufacturing, sustainability, energy, business and education.
The comfort and convenience of modern life are intimately associated with the discovery, manipulation, and selection of natural and synthetic materials. Advancements in materials science and engineering (MSE) have led to a better understanding and manipulation of materials, which is a prerequisite for future technological processes.
Our MSE program aims to nurture students to become material experts and contribute to the fast-growing high-tech industry. Besides a broad selection of expertise in construction materials, bio-materials, and energy materials, our program also offers training for students on Artificial Intelligence (AI) assisted material development. There are also various opportunities where the students can gain hands-on experience through research and industrial internship schemes and strengthen their portfolios during their studies.
Join us to Make Something Extraordinary!
The Materials Science and Engineering major is the first and currently the only Materials Science and Engineering degree accredited by the Hong Kong Institution of Engineers.
The Materials Science and Engineering major aims to equip students with the skills and knowledge required to meet local and regional needs in the industrial, commercial, government and education sectors.
In particular, graduates of this major understand the production, fabrication and service performance of engineering materials, including conventional bulk materials, advanced thin film and nanostructured materials. Working with other engineering specialists, our graduates contribute to the design, manufacture, maintenance, safety enhancement and testing of engineering components, devices, structures and processing plants.
Entrance Scholarship Scheme
CityUHK has an Entrance Scholarship Scheme for international students with excellent academic performance who are admitted to full-time government-funded bachelor's degree programmes.
The Scheme offers three kinds of scholarships:
- Top Scholarships of HKD210,000 (approximately USD27,000), covering annual tuition fees, university-managed accommodation and partial living expenses
- Full Tuition Scholarships, covering annual tuition fees (approximately USD21,800)
- Half Tuition Scholarships, covering half of the annual tuition fees (approximately USD10,900)
Applicants do not have to apply for these scholarships. The appropriate level of scholarship is awarded based on merit. Students who receive the scholarship are required to attain a Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) of 3.2 or above each year throughout their period of study in order to renew the scholarship.
Diversity Grant
Non-local students admitted from underrepresented nationalities except Top Scholarship recipients will be eligible for the new grant of HKD 30,000 per annum.
Awardees will be required to engage in a volunteer activity to enhance internationalisation of CityUHK annually. The grant will be paid in installments and automatically renewed each year.
HKSAR Government Scholarship Fund
The Fund supports outstanding non-local students to pursue undergraduate studies in Hong Kong, with targeted scholarships made available to first-year full-time students from countries/regions along the Belt and Road, such as Indonesia, Malaysia, Thailand, Myanmar and Mongolia.
Outstanding Athletes Entrance Scholarship for Non-Local Students
This scheme is to provide opportunities for outstanding student athletes to study in CityUHK. Through the provisions of scholarships, it is hoped to attract high performing international athletes to CityUHK and further enhance the performance of university sports teams. Selected students will be able to receive Outstanding Athletes Entrance Scholarship of up to HK$200,000 (approximately USD25,600) per annum for International / Continental Level.
In the Materials Science and Engineering major, students acquire knowledge that can be used to solve materials problems in engineering processes. Graduates of this major can seek jobs in engineering companies and join the Hong Kong Institution of Engineers as graduate members. They can become professional engineers after receiving the relevant on-the-job training and completing the professional assessment.
Materials Science and Engineering have permeated all industrial sectors. Graduates may choose to work in many different areas, such as electronics, toy, plastic, metal, ceramic, and construction industries, or in testing laboratories. They may also be employed as quality control engineers, production engineers, testing engineers, or technical sales engineers for equipment, machinery, and materials.
A materials science and engineering education predisposes students to a life enriched by the ability to understand technical information and analyse problems using scientific reasoning. In the past, materials science and engineering graduates have pursued successful careers in other diverse fields such as finance, business, and education.
Applicants are expected to have a science or engineering background.
