Key Summary
The BAS major is a unique programme that fosters interdisciplinary enquiry, balances theoretical knowledge and practical skills in new media arts, connects technological and scientific concepts and methods to creative practices, offers signature courses in Arts Tech, and prepares students for jobs in new media arts and creative industries. This major is designed for students who want to explore the intersection of art, science, and technology and to develop the skills and knowledge necessary to succeed in the rapidly evolving creative industries.
Media creators are increasingly using scientific concepts in their work. Games, for instance, use ideas from physics, biology and mathematics. Multimedia artists are also learning to collaborate with scientists when producing their work. This ground-breaking major is a response to this cutting-edge trend in the creative world.
This major emphasises lateral thinking and understanding across professions to prepare graduates for an increasingly interdependent and integrated world. Students use technology as an artistic medium, generating learning in a progressive and interdisciplinary context that bridges art, science, technology, and the humanities. The curriculum encourages creative and critical thinking in the domain of digital content, together with the successful expression of a socially engaged personal vision through various digital media formats. Graduates receive professional training in state-of-the-art facilities to prepare them for future careers in the use of art, science, and technology in the creative industries, innovative education, and cultural management.
This major is especially designed for students who are not afraid to break down the barriers between the arts and the sciences.
Graduates will be prepared to become creative artists and content providers for the games industry, animation, TV and digital media broadcasting, cinema, photography, web design, software development and the contemporary arts. They may also choose to join the quickly advancing interactive media industry connected to advertising, exhibition and trade shows, or the emerging field of computer imaging for the health and science professions. Graduates will be equipped to become key players in those areas that call for a close dialogue between art, science and culture.
Entrance Scholarship Scheme
CityUHK has an Entrance Scholarship Scheme for international students with excellent academic performance who are admitted to full-time government-funded bachelor's degree programmes.
The Scheme offers three kinds of scholarships:
- Top Scholarships of HKD210,000 (approximately USD27,000), covering annual tuition fees, university-managed accommodation and partial living expenses
- Full Tuition Scholarships, covering annual tuition fees (approximately USD21,800)
- Half Tuition Scholarships, covering half of the annual tuition fees (approximately USD10,900)
Applicants do not have to apply for these scholarships. The appropriate level of scholarship is awarded based on merit. Students who receive the scholarship are required to attain a Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) of 3.2 or above each year throughout their period of study in order to renew the scholarship.
Diversity Grant
Non-local students admitted from underrepresented nationalities except Top Scholarship recipients will be eligible for the new grant of HKD 30,000 per annum.
Awardees will be required to engage in a volunteer activity to enhance internationalisation of CityUHK annually. The grant will be paid in installments and automatically renewed each year.
HKSAR Government Scholarship Fund
The Fund supports outstanding non-local students to pursue undergraduate studies in Hong Kong, with targeted scholarships made available to first-year full-time students from countries/regions along the Belt and Road, such as Indonesia, Malaysia, Thailand, Myanmar and Mongolia.
Outstanding Athletes Entrance Scholarship for Non-Local Students
This scheme is to provide opportunities for outstanding student athletes to study in CityUHK. Through the provisions of scholarships, it is hoped to attract high performing international athletes to CityUHK and further enhance the performance of university sports teams. Selected students will be able to receive Outstanding Athletes Entrance Scholarship of up to HK$200,000 (approximately USD25,600) per annum for International / Continental Level.
