Key Summary
The programme equips students with theoretical and practical knowledge in the English language, literature, and professional communication. Our courses develop students’ ability to analyse critically the English language and its use in a variety of genres, modes, and media. Upon completion of the programme, students will have acquired the skills and attitudes essential for successful communication in linguistically and culturally diverse contexts.
As the programme focuses on developing students' skills in critical thinking and English-language communication, it prepares them for a wide range of professions, including management and administration, editing and publishing, writing, teaching, public relations, advertising, entertainment and the arts.
BA English (Language and Literature stream) is listed as one of the Recognised English Major Degree Programmes for the Scholarship for Prospective English Teachers run by the Education Bureau (EDB).
Upon successful completion of this major, students should be able to:
- Demonstrate communicative competence in English in a wide range of local and international contexts.
- Apply theories of linguistics, communication, and literary and cultural studies to discover and analyze the way language is used in a range of settings.
- Demonstrate an understanding of the role of English both locally and globally.
- Generate and execute innovative language-based projects individually and through effective collaboration.
- Apply a spirit of discovery and creativity to the study of English.
The programme adopts a global perspective on English and emphasises the importance of intercultural knowledge, effective communication, and critical thinking. Students are encouraged to take part in at least one overseas learning experience (e.g. English language immersion, student exchange or overseas internship) to improve their global awareness and enhance their English communication skills within diverse settings.
The programme provides students with hands-on workplace experience of using English and communication skills in real-world corporate and creative settings. The internship course is compulsory for all students and is designed to provide students with a chance to apply the theories and skills they have learnt in the classroom to real-world workplace situations. Previous host organisations include the equestrian events at the Beijing Olympic Games, Reader’s Digest, WorldVision, the Hong Kong Literary Festival, South China Morning Post Publishers Ltd., SPCA (Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals), and the American Women's Association.
Note: BA English is a qualification recognised for exemption from the Language Proficiency Requirement (LPR) (English Language).
Entrance Scholarship Scheme
CityUHK has an Entrance Scholarship Scheme for international students with excellent academic performance who are admitted to full-time government-funded bachelor's degree programmes.
The Scheme offers three kinds of scholarships:
- Top Scholarships of HKD210,000 (approximately USD27,000), covering annual tuition fees, university-managed accommodation and partial living expenses
- Full Tuition Scholarships, covering annual tuition fees (approximately USD21,800)
- Half Tuition Scholarships, covering half of the annual tuition fees (approximately USD10,900)
Applicants do not have to apply for these scholarships. The appropriate level of scholarship is awarded based on merit. Students who receive the scholarship are required to attain a Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) of 3.2 or above each year throughout their period of study in order to renew the scholarship.
Diversity Grant
Non-local students admitted from underrepresented nationalities except Top Scholarship recipients will be eligible for the new grant of HKD 30,000 per annum.
Awardees will be required to engage in a volunteer activity to enhance internationalisation of CityUHK annually. The grant will be paid in installments and automatically renewed each year.
HKSAR Government Scholarship Fund
The Fund supports outstanding non-local students to pursue undergraduate studies in Hong Kong, with targeted scholarships made available to first-year full-time students from countries/regions along the Belt and Road, such as Indonesia, Malaysia, Thailand, Myanmar and Mongolia.
Outstanding Athletes Entrance Scholarship for Non-Local Students
This scheme is to provide opportunities for outstanding student athletes to study in CityUHK. Through the provisions of scholarships, it is hoped to attract high performing international athletes to CityUHK and further enhance the performance of university sports teams.
