Key Summary
About: Students in the MPhil in Environment join an active research group supervised by faculty across the School of Energy and Environment’s two major specializations. This research-led programme requires independent original research culminating in a dissertation. Students join a collaborative environment emphasizing rigorous investigation, innovation and problem-solving with professors and peers on pressing environmental issues. Graduates leave prepared for roles needing research experience in environmental science and management.
Career Outcomes: Graduates pursue careers in academia, government, industry and non-profit sectors, or continue to doctoral study. Typical roles include research scientist, environmental consultant, sustainability officer, PhD candidate, and industry research roles.
Students in the programme typically join an active research group under the supervision of faculty members whose work spans the school’s two major specializations, Atmospheric & Climate and Water & Waste, areas that reflect the depth of environmental research at CityU. In the Atmospheric & Climate area, research spans topics such as air pollution, earth system modelling, and climate science, equipping students with an advanced understanding of atmospheric processes and climate dynamics. Meanwhile, the Water & Waste specialization focuses on water quality, wastewater treatment, resource recovery from waste, and other technologies that address environmental contamination and sustainability.
Because this is a research-led degree, students are expected to carry out independent, original research that culminates in a dissertation project. From day one, they become part of a collaborative research environment that emphasises rigorous investigation, innovation, and problem-solving skills, working alongside professors and peers on pressing environmental issues. Graduates leave well-equipped for careers in academia, government, industry, or non-profit sectors where deep technical insight and research experience in environmental science and management are highly valued.
Students are required to fulfill the stipulated core course and elective requirements by the Chow Yei Ching School of Graduate Studies (SGS) and their home College/Department.
