This program will give you a broad systems engineering base, suited to the design and understanding of complex, computer-controlled products and systems.
Modern passenger cars, for example, feature highly integrated intelligent systems, with multiple computers, sensors, and communication devices working together to create safer and more efficient vehicles. Other rapidly developing areas for the field include networks for HVDC power transmission, healthcare devices, and intelligent robots for both industrial and consumer use.
But there is plenty of room for improvement. All these applications are only possible with the input of engineers, who make them accurate, adaptable, efficient, and safe. Whether through energy savings, reduction of environmental impacts, or streamlining production processes to be more economical, this master’s program will allow you to push the field forward, with an education ideally tailored to the future challenges and demands facing the industry. You will be contributing to development by designing and refining sensing, monitoring, and control functions for all sorts of products and systems.
The program also offers course packages focused on subtopics and relevant fields of application in the industry. Compulsory courses year 1
During the first year, the master's programme starts with four compulsory courses that form a common foundation in Systems, control and mechatronics. Each course is usually 7.5 credits.
- Modelling and simulation
- Discrete event systems
- Linear control system design
- Model-based development of cyber-physical systems
The compulsory courses focus on general systems engineering skills and aim at providing a set of generic methods and tools:
- In Modelling and simulation, you will learn the basic tools for systematic modelling from physics, and/or experiments and simulation of those. These skills are used in many branches of systems engineering.
- Discrete event systems provide the basics for modelling and analysing systems with complex logic that is often present in man-made systems, for example, within embedded products and production systems.
- Linear control systems design describes the fundamental ideas behind feedback control systems, based upon the triplet sensing – decision–actuation, with a focus on model-based control system design.
- In Model-based development of cyber-physical systems, you will apply the knowledge from the previous courses in modelling and control in a real project that includes all phases from modelling, simulation, and control design, to implementation, validation and testing.
Compulsory courses year 2
In the second year, you must complete a master's thesis to graduate. The thesis may be worth 30 credits.

In a Design project in Systems, control and mechatronics, a structured project methodology is used in solving a larger design and implementation problem in a team where the skills from the previous courses are necessary to successfully solve the project.
Due to its integrating properties, the programme Systems, control and Mechatronics lead to a wide range of career opportunities with an emphasis on the operation, design, development, and research of complex technical systems within almost any branch of industry. The generality of many of the methods offers great opportunities in terms of choosing among many different domains of application. The acquired skills are needed at manufacturing companies, supplier companies, consulting firms, and utility companies.
Job roles range from applied research to product and system development and operation, as well as sales support and product planning. In addition, other career opportunities may arise, such as academic researchers, technical advisors, project managers, and teachers at different levels.
