Key Summary
The demand for competent and educated leaders in the maritime industry, both onboard ships at sea, and in organizations onshore, is higher than ever. In this master’s program, students will prepare to take up vital roles as future leaders in the shipping industry — guiding the industry into a new era and tackling the dual challenges of complex logistics issues and the strictest demands on quality.
The program will give you theoretical and practical knowledge in subjects including project management, quality, risk, and safety management, delivered at Chalmers’ extremely high standards. The program also teaches skills within the areas of leadership and communication, marine environmental protection, and energy management. An emphasis on business acumen is also featured, with courses including business development and business strategy management.
The ideal candidate for the program is a maritime professional, preferably with some years of experience in the shipping industry, for example with a BSc degree in marine or nautical engineering, shipping and logistics, or equivalent education. A genuine passion for quality and sustainability is a must.
After graduation, you will be well-placed to take up higher management positions at leading companies within the fields of ship management and strategic management. You will also have the possibility to take part in research education and projects during your studies, graduating with sufficient knowledge and formal qualifications to apply for further research studies in these areas.

Compulsory courses year 1
During the first year, the programme starts with six compulsory courses that form a common foundation in Maritime management. Each course is usually 7.5 credits.

Compulsory courses year 2
In the second year, you must complete a master's thesis to graduate. The thesis may be worth 30 credits or 60 credits depending on your choice.

Graduates from the program can apply for higher management positions at companies in the shipping industry within the fields of ship management and strategic management with the natural possibility for promotion. Graduates also have sufficient knowledge and formal qualifications to apply for research studies in these areas.
Many of our alumni start their careers in the HSEQ field (Health, Safety, Environment and Quality) or different types of project managers within the maritime industry (R&D manager, Operations Manager, New building manager etc.) Others pursue careers within the Marine insurance domain. (Underwriters, claims adjustors, surveyors etc.) Another line of business that employs many of our previous students is flag state administrations.
