Key Summary

About: The Specialization in Leather Tanning trains graduates to design products and processes raw hides to finished leather. You'll study how each stage affects properties and environmental impact. The institution is part of the Network of Public Centers of the National Council of Science and Technology (CONACYT), contributing to technological and economic development via industry innovation programmes.

The curriculum covers three areas: innovation and process optimization for the tanning industry; analytical chemistry for tanning formulations; and environmental management to control processes and impacts with quantitative records.

Career Outcomes: Graduates can work as process engineers, tannery managers, formulation chemists, environmental officers.

The graduate of the Specialization in Leather Tanning will design new products and processes for the tannery through the study of the transformation experienced by raw leather, until its conversion into finished leather. Graduates will understand the influence of each of the process stages on the properties of the final product as well as its environmental impact.

The three knowledge areas covered by the curriculum are:

• Innovation and optimization of processes in the tanning and related industry; It is taught with a focus on innovation, to improve existing processes or to implement new processes to convert leathers into leathers with defined characteristics.

• Analytical chemistry applied to tanning. Skills are developed to define the formulations of the products and supplies that are used to tan the hides or apply their finishes.

• Environmental management. Procedures are applied to control processes and their environmental impact from the establishment of working methods and quantitative records by sub-processes.
