Key Summary
How shall we govern ourselves, deal with one another and value the planet’s resources? How will we resolve disparities between the haves and the have nots? In our interconnected yet divided world, these are critical issues. Philosophy, politics, and economics is an interdisciplinary program bringing together faculty from politics, business, and religious studies to examine the way the world works.
In Carroll University’s philosophy, politics, and economics program, you’ll explore contemporary questions about wealth and poverty, the market economy, and the relationship between the economic, political, and legal orders in the context of philosophy, political science, and economics.
In philosophy, you’ll learn the ideas and theories that shaped society and culture and practice the intellectual tools needed for ethical reflection. In politics, you’ll learn the variety of political structures that govern society and the complexities involved in political choices. And in economics, you’ll learn about market forces and the social issues related to economic trends and decision-making.
Your main course of study will include core classes in the history and principles of philosophy, political theory, government structures and policy, macro and microeconomics, and economic history. You’ll be encouraged to seek internships related to your career goals and have opportunities for international study to broaden your perspective and obtain real-world experiences. And in your final year, you’ll undertake a senior research project designed and completed under the individual supervision of a faculty mentor that will integrate your learning in all three fields.
You’ll emerge with a deeper understanding of how people shape societies, govern themselves, and determine their values. Education in this program will prepare you for law school, numerous graduate programs, or for careers in fields such as foreign service, politics, non-governmental organizations (NGOs), journalism, or international business.
Minor
In addition to the major, Carroll offers a minor in philosophy that complements many areas of study:

- Students will be able to identify and critically discuss in written and oral fashion government structures and decision-making processes.
- Students will be able to identify and critically discuss in written and oral fashion key concepts, figures, movements, and ideas in philosophy.
- Students will be able to identify and critically discuss in written and oral fashion the function of market forces and the larger social issues related to economic forces and decision-making.
- Students will be able to identify and critically discuss in written and oral fashion the integration of the fundamental concepts and ideas of Philosophy, Political Science, and Economics and the way these ideas shape fundamental societal issues of justice, citizenship, social order, wealth, and poverty, globalization, freedom, et. al.
- Students will be able to identify, analyze, and respond critically to relevant issues using appropriate research and bibliographic materials and facilities commonly employed in the fields of Philosophy, Political Science, and Economics.

The University participates in three types of financial aid programs for its International students: scholarships, grants, and employment.
Scholarships
Carroll University offers completive scholarships for international undergraduate students. 100 percent of Carroll University students receive scholarship assistance, which helps them find a balance between studies, work, and extra-curricular activities. Scholarships play a key role in maintaining Carroll's accessibility for all students. On average our international scholarship covers 45-55% of the cost of attendance for full-time undergraduate students.
Grants
Grants are awarded based upon a student’s demonstrated financial need in addition to the guaranteed International scholarship. Like scholarships, grants are considered gift aid that does not need to be repaid.
Student Employment
University employment opportunities allow students to work part-time on campus, earn an hourly wage and receive a monthly paycheck while attending Carroll. Students may work from approximately five to fourteen hours each week. The number of hours a student may work depends upon the student’s financial aid award. International students get awarded an average of $2,000-$2,500 in university employment grants every year.
