Introduction

The Master of Arts in Applied Linguistics & Second Language Acquisition is a one-year, intensive program designed to prepare U.S. and international students for a variety of careers in language education and research. The program offers opportunities to specialize in language learning research and teaching in languages such as Arabic, Chinese, French, German, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Russian, Spanish and English.

Leveraging the strengths of Carnegie Mellon University's Department of Languages, Cultures & Applied Linguistics, the program focuses on areas such as second language acquisition, language program administration, cultural studies, pedagogy and technology-enhanced learning.

Graduates will be eligible for employment in higher education institutions, private schools, public (alternative certification) secondary schools and various settings in the U.S. and abroad, particularly in ESL. The program also provides a pathway for further graduate studies in second language studies.

The program can be completed in one full-time academic year or over up to eight semesters of part-time enrollment. It is open to undergraduates completing their four-year degree as well as individuals interested in applied linguistics, second language acquisition research and developing their teaching skills in language, culture and content. No prior teaching experience is required.
