Key Summary
About: Cañada College’s Interior Design Certificate meets IDEX exam education requirements for California CID eligibility and ASID allied membership. Bachelor’s holders can consult counselors to substitute early college courses and waive general-education units toward an AS after certificate completion. Available on campus or online via the Global Online Learning (GOL) program. Cañada provides supportive and hands-on studio work and transfer pathways to four-year universities.
Career Outcomes: Graduates can work in residential design, space planning, kitchen & bath, commercial and sustainable design, retail sales, historic preservation, lighting, or showroom/product representation. Related roles include interior stylist, CAD technician, and design sales specialist.
The Interior Design Certificate of Achievement meets the minimum education qualifying requirements for the IDEX (Interior Design Examination) exam to become a Certified Interior Designer (CID) in California once the student graduates from the program and for the ASID (American Society of Interior Designers) allied membership. If a student has earned a bachelor's degree, they need to see a counselor regarding courses completed during the first two years of college that may be substituted for core requirement courses. Also, they can have their general education unit requirement waived to earn the AS degree in Interior Design after completion of the required units from the certificate.
In addition to in-person studies, most programs are available through the Global Online Learning (GOL) Program, which allows students to take classes fully online from their home countries.
Selective Courses, choose a minimum of 6 units from the following:
Students completing this program will be able to:
- Communicate design concepts clearly and concisely (i.e. visual, oral, and written).
- Develop competitive industry-standard skills in the respective fields.
- Understand the elements and principles of design through discipline-specific implementation.
The San Mateo Colleges of Silicon Valley (SMCSV) offer more than 50 institutional scholarships each year, and all enrolled students are eligible to apply. Award amounts range from $300 to $7,000, helping make college more affordable. Students can also apply for external scholarships, such as the $1,000 Study in California Scholarship, to further support their educational journey.
Options for career paths include residential design, space planning and home staging, kitchen and bath design, commercial design, sustainable design, retail sales, historic preservation and renovation, lighting design, or showroom or product manufacturer's representative.
