Key Summary
About: Cañada College's Associate Degree in Computer Science teaches C++ or Java, so you can match your transfer institution's preference. Located in Redwood City near Silicon Valley, the college offers hands-on learning, clear transfer pathways and strong UC transfer rates – including 50% to UC Berkeley and near‑100% honors transfers to UCLA. Many courses are available via the Global Online Learning (GOL) Program to study online.
Career Outcomes: Graduates transfer to four-year computer science programmes or enter entry-level tech roles. You'll build foundations in algorithms, data structures, software development and computer architecture. Potential roles include programmer, software developer, web developer.
This degree can be completed in either C++ or JAVA programming languages. Students will need to determine which language is preferred by the transfer institution.
In addition to in-person studies, most programs are available through the Global Online Learning (GOL) Program, which allows students to take classes fully online from their home countries
The San Mateo Colleges of Silicon Valley (SMCSV) offer more than 50 institutional scholarships each year, and all enrolled students are eligible to apply. Award amounts range from $300 to $7,000, helping make college more affordable. Students can also apply for external scholarships, such as the $1,000 Study in California Scholarship, to further support their educational journey.
Students completing this program will be able to:
- Apply knowledge of math, science and computer science to identify, formulate, and solve computer science problems.
- Communicate effectively and work well in situations that require teamwork.
- Design and perform tests or experiments, analyze and interpret data, and prepare a report summarizing the results of the tests of experiments.
- Develop a design or system given a set of requirements and specifications
- Use techniques, skills, and modern engineering and computer tools necessary for engineering or computer science practice.
Students completing this degree will be ready to transfer to a 4-yr institution to complete study in computer science. A basic knowledge of computer structure and programming adds to many jobs - both as a programmer, working with programmers and as a content expert developing programs for projects in that field.
