Introduction
Child Development - Early Development and Learning
The field of Child Development is dedicated to understanding how individuals change over time from conception through adolescence. The knowledge of developmental processes, of what changes and what stays constant, and of what influences change is essential for making sound decisions regarding children's welfare and individual success. The program in Child Development includes in-class and field experiences to prepare students to become knowledgeable and effective child and family professionals. Initially, students master the basics of development in different developmental periods. As they advance through the program, they focus on specific areas with the goal of developing a deeper understanding of issues related to development, its study, and its application.
The courses recommended for Early Teaching and Learning Concentration are designed to prepare students with foundational knowledge and skills in curriculum development and observation and assessment methods in early childhood settings. Students may also select courses that will enhance their knowledge of childrenโs language and math learning. Students who intend to work as preschool teachers, childcare providers, or want to develop curriculum for childcare centers would benefit from selecting the courses in this concentration. Students will gain an understanding of the concepts and theories associated with development and learning from birth through age 5. Students will learn how to plan and implement age-appropriate learning experiences as well as assess childrenโs abilities.
