Key Summary
Introduction
Develop a sustainability mindset, learn how to challenge orthodox thinking and make the world more ecologically, socially and economically sustainable. This MSc provides students with the ability to apply a business perspective towards developing sustainable goals.
Understand the scale and nature of sustainability as a global issue and how this varies across the global north and south. You will recognise the key enabling and constraining, political and institutional contexts which affect sustainable business practice.

Funding Opportunities for Master's Degrees
There are several Master's funding options for our courses, and these will vary depending on whether you’re a student from the UK, or EU, or an international student from outside the EU.
AMBS Scholarship
A limited number of partial scholarships are available across all our master’s courses. The value of the scholarships will go towards the cost of the full course tuition fee. All applicants who hold an offer will automatically be considered for the Alliance Manchester Business School Scholarship. There is no application process for this scholarship.
There are also several external awards which you can apply for directly on the Scholarships and Funding page.
Please note: if you are successful in receiving more than one scholarship award, the total scholarship amount must not exceed 50% of your course tuition fees.
Curriculum
Course unit details
During the course you will be taking 180 credits in all. The eight taught modules during semester one and two total 120 credits.
Semester One
- Sustainability as a Global Grand Challenge
- Navigating Whole System Transitions
- Foundations & cases in Sustainable Business
- Responsible Management
Semester Two
- Evidence and analysis for sustainable business projects
- Sustainable entrepreneurship & business model innovation
- Accounting, finance and the ESG agenda
- International dimensions of sustainable business
Dissertation or Sustainable Business Research project (60 credits)
- Apply what you have learned in the taught part of the course
- A dissertation normally consists of a literature review followed by a piece of work based on qualitative or quantitative research
- Sustainable Business Research project consists of a group challenge and a piece of individual critical analysis work, supported by a literature review
- Group projects may be based on real-life or live sustainable business problems, including through The University of Manchester University Living Lab
Program Outcome
You will also:
- Gain a critical understanding of the key global sustainability debates and challenges
- Explore key theories of sustainability transitions and sustainable business
- Understand how to critically engage with sustainable business perspectives to facilitate societal transitions to sustainable futures
- Develop an understanding of research methods and analytics, including techniques of data collection and analysis necessary for developing a critical perspective on sustainability challenges and sustainable solutions
