Introduction

The Graduate Diploma in Hospitality Management (GDHM) is designed for graduates of a bachelor’s degree or similar qualification in a discipline other than hospitality management who wish to gain the knowledge necessary to pursue a career in the hospitality sector.

Job Opportunities

Management positions in NZ’s largest industry - hotels, resorts, restaurants, marketing and sales, events and convention center managers, food and beverage management, rooms division management, customer service.

Programme Information

The programme comprises seven courses, including compulsory internship placement:
(Please note that not all elective modules are offered every semester)

5.101 Principles of Hospitality Management
5.204 Hospitality and Tourism Strategic Management
5.303 Integrated Approach to Hospitality Management

And four Stage III elective courses selected from Tourism Management or Hospitality Management programmes.

Internship Option

5.398 Hospitality Internship Project may be taken in place of two Stage 3 elective courses and comprises an internship of 20 hours per week over 12 weeks (240 hours minimum). The internship will take place in a hospitality establishment to gain practical knowledge and experience in planning and production, dealing with customers, risk assessment, and planning the implementation of operations for daily events.

Internship placements are coordinated via the Student Careers Centre (SCC) and are available at the following hospitality establishments:

  • Hilton Hotels
  • Rydges Hotels
  • The Langham Hotels
  • SkyCity
  • SkyCity Grand Hotel
  • Pullman Hotels
  • Accor Hotels
  • Millenium Hotels
  • Showcase Hospitality
  • Good Group Hospitality

Students are required to keep a detailed log of their experiences and provide a systematic analytical framework for recording and analyzing their observations.

Entry Requirements

  • Bachelor degree at least equivalent to New Zealand pass standard; and
  • IELTS 6.0 with no individual band lower than 5.5 / TOEFL iBT 60 (with a writing score of 18) / Pearson 50 / TEP 52 or equivalent with no band less than 12
  • Candidates without a Bachelor degree but with an appropriate mix of a lesser qualification and work experience may be approved for special admission by the Academic Board
