Key Summary
Why the Master of Music in Arnhem?
The Master of Music in Arnhem is for musicians and creators who want to take their artistic practice beyond their instrument, genre or discipline. Originally developed from elements in the Jazz & Pop and Music Theatre master’s programmes, it has evolved into a place for artistic autonomy, interdisciplinary experimentation and boundary-pushing artistry.
You will work in an interdisciplinary community on the ArtEZ university campus in Arnhem, where music, theatre, dance, writing, design and visual art come together. Here, you will have the freedom to deepen or reinvent your artistic practice. You will choose your own specialisation, work on projects that matter to you and explore how your work relates to audience, context and society.
This master’s programme will not give you ready-made answers. Instead, it will offer you space, artistic guidance and a stimulating environment in which to develop your own artistic signature.
- You will work across disciplines on an arts university campus, where music, theatre, dance, design, visual art and writing meet;
- You will experiment with new forms and collaborations that cross genres and disciplines;
- You will take a research-based approach, and your questions and personal interests will drive your artistic process. Here, research is a means, not a goal;
- Together with your lecturers and guest artists, you will create a personal study plan with plenty of room for your own choices and professional feedback;
- You will develop, present and reflect, from the studio to the stage.
Each year, in consultation with your mentor, you will write a personal study plan in which you formulate your learning goals, projects and research questions. You will have many options both within and outside the programme. You will decide which classes to take, which artistic professionals to invite for masterclasses and lessons, and how to use your personal budget. You are in charge of your own development and responsible for your progress with plenty of freedom. The only conditions are that you meet the required number of credits and that your components are artistically in line with your goals.
After successfully completing this master’s programme, you will earn a Master of Music degree and will then be able to use the title Master of Music (MMus).
This programme is registered in the RIO (Register of Institutions and Programmes) under code 44739. The formal programme name listed in the RIO is Master Muziek, and this is the name that will appear on your diploma.
The Master of Music in Arnhem gives you space to experiment, broadens your horizons, and brings you closer to your full potential. Once you have graduated, you will continue your musical practice – now with fresh perspectives and deepened experience. You will know how to spark new ways of thinking and listening. You will be well-accustomed to working from a basis of artistic research and experimentation, and will be able to explain, share and expand on your artistic choices. You will have learned to question your work critically while thinking beyond traditional boundaries and to harness an entrepreneurial spirit. All in all, you will leave with a renewed framework for developing your artistic identity.
After graduation, you will know where your strengths lie and how to make the most of them. You will understand how to collaborate effectively and how to organise such collaborations. You will know how the professional field operates, how to contribute to it and how to make the most of opportunities. Here, you will develop a mindset that is proactive, curious, critical and open, so thinking in possibilities will be second nature to you. You will leave the programme with your own clear artistic signature and creativity in the broadest sense of the word. Many graduates combine their artistic practice with collaborations in the professional field, international projects, artistic research or educational work.
With your master’s diploma, you will:
• have the skills to create new forms of work, even as the field evolves;
• take ownership of your artistic practice and give it clear direction;
• move between disciplines and build meaningful, innovative connections;
• know how to make an impact across different contexts, from stages and festivals to social or educational settings;
• be ready to enrich, renew and challenge the professional field.
