The Computer Engineering Technology - Computing Science program is a three-year Ontario College Advanced Diploma that develops analytical thinking and problem-solving skills for careers in programming and software development. Students learn a variety of programming languages (Java, C#, C++, C and others), operating systems (Windows, Unix/Linux, QNX), development tools and debugging techniques for integrated and embedded applications and software systems.
In the final year students work in teams on sponsored, real‑world projects as part of the software engineering portion of the program. Elective choices include game programming, business programming (COBOL), business intelligence and data analytics. The majority of the curriculum consists of courses in systems programming, software development, testing and maintenance. The balance includes technical communications, mathematics and general education electives.
Students have the option to pursue a paid co-operative education (co-op) work term sequence (three co-op work terms). Co-op participation is subject to availability and academic eligibility; admission to the co‑op program does not guarantee a co‑op placement. The program is PGWP-eligible (CIP Code: 15.1201).
The curriculum is presented in six levels across three years (Levels 01–06). The majority of the curriculum consists of core courses in systems programming, software development, testing and maintenance, plus technical communications, mathematics and general education electives. In the final year students work in teams on sponsored real‑world projects (Project 1 / Project 2). Elective groups permit students to choose options (e.g. game programming; business programming/COBOL; AI in software development; business intelligence and data analytics). A co-op option is available with required co‑op preparation/job search courses and up to three paid co‑op work terms; co‑op participation and placements are subject to availability and academic eligibility.
Graduates may find employment as systems, integration, and applications programmers and/or testers, and as customer service representatives providing training and product support to clients of high technology corporations. Graduates may also pursue careers in game and multimedia development; GUI (graphical user interface) development; IT communications, IT security, real-time and database systems; web-based applications; and technical roles in federal, provincial and municipal government.
