The Speech and Language Technology major is part of the Master’s Programme in Computer, Communication and Information Sciences (CCIS) and is organised by the School of Electrical Engineering. The programme (120 ECTS) is a two-year full‑time MSc (Technology) degree that provides deep theoretical and methodological training in speech and language technologies (including speech analysis, synthesis, recognition, coding, and statistical language modelling) together with extensive practical skills (advanced programming, machine learning, data analysis). Studies integrate research projects and practical group work, and students may choose a long (60 ECTS) or compact (40 ECTS) major, include minors/electives, and complete a 30 ECTS Master's thesis. Graduates are prepared for roles in research & development in industry or academia, entrepreneurship (startups), and further doctoral studies.
Total 120 ECTS over two years. Components: Major studies (40–60 ECTS: compact 40 ECTS or long 60 ECTS), possible master‑level minor (20–25 ECTS for compact major), elective studies (25–30 ECTS), and Master’s thesis (30 ECTS). The first year focuses on foundations (speech & language processing, machine learning); later studies deepen specialised topics and allow personalised study tracks. The major emphasises practical project work and research integration.
Tuition fee for non‑EU/EEA citizens: €17,000 per academic year. Aalto University offers a small number of tuition‑fee waiver scholarships to fee‑paying students; scholarships are awarded to highest‑achieving applicants based on the programme's evaluation criteria.
A degree in Speech and Language Technology opens careers in research and development in industry and academia, positions in companies building speech and language systems, and entrepreneurship (graduates have founded startups such as Hokema, Ääni Company and Speechly). Aalto's career services and flexible curriculum also support students in securing employment during or after studies, and the degree provides eligibility for doctoral studies.
