Key Summary
Introduction
With an ever-increasing dependency on technological processes in science, biomedical imaging has become a popular choice for those with a background in subjects ranging from biosciences to engineering. New imaging technologies are developed constantly, and imaging has become an essential tool for cutting-edge discoveries in the biotech industry, as well as in areas such as biomedical research. In the Master’s Degree Programme in Biomedical Imaging, students will gain an understanding of the theoretical and practical processes of a wide range of biomedical imaging technologies, with a heavy focus on the interdisciplinary nature of the field.
The mandatory courses in the biomedical imaging programme cover a range of subjects from microscopic applications to cell biology, anatomy and physiology, nanomedicine or biophysics. In addition, students are allowed to specialize in targeted areas of biomedical imaging through their choice of selectable major subject studies. Courses cover techniques like light microscopy, advanced fluorescence techniques, super-resolution imaging techniques, PET, electron microscopy, atomic force microscopy and digital image analysis. Students will also gain practical experience in working in a research group while doing an internship and writing their master’s thesis. All of these components will provide students with a strong basis for further studies in an academic and professional context.
The courses are given by two universities in Turku (Åbo Akademi University and University of Turku), with well-equipped laboratories and state-of-the-art facilities. Lecturers and experts from a broad international network of top-ranking experts in imaging will be invited to participate in ongoing workshops, laboratory courses, seminars and symposia.

Career Opportunities
Upon successful completion of this programme, our students have gone on to work in several diverse roles within the biomedical and scientific sectors. Many of our students have continued to study at PhD level with success in a wide variety of fields ranging from biosciences to dentistry. Additionally, our students have obtained roles as imaging core facility personnel and lab technicians. A small sample of the titles obtained by our students include Multimedia Producer at the Institute of Biomedicine, Euro-BioImaging Node Technician, and Coordinator at Turku BioImaging.
Scholarships and Funding
Tuition fee-paying (non-EU/EEA) applicants applying to our master's degree programmes can apply for the Finland scholarship (in connection with applying for studies at Åbo Akademi University).
Finland scholarship/100% Tuition Fee Scholarship (waiver), awarded for 2 years (second year conditional)
- Number of scholarships to be granted: 1/programme
Finland Scholarships awarded by Åbo Akademi University are part of the national Finland Scholarship programme. This scholarship will be awarded to the most merited applicant in each programme.
The Finland scholarship covers 100% of the tuition fee for two years, the second year is conditional and requires that the student has earned at least 55 ECTS during the first year of studies.
In addition, the applicant is awarded a one-time 5000€ relocation grant, which will be paid to the student, to a Finnish bank account, once they have arrived in Turku/Vaasa and enrolled as present for the academic year.
To be considered for the Finland scholarship you must apply for it as part of your application for admission during the application period. Applicants will find, in the application form, a set of questions evaluating motivation and communicative skills, academic goals and general interest in the field. The applicant’s answers will be assessed by the programme and the scholarship committee. The committee decides which applicants will be awarded a Finland scholarship. The decision on the granted scholarship will be included in the admission letter.
Please note that if you are exempted from paying tuition fees, you will no longer be eligible for Finland scholarships.
80% Tuition Fee Scholarship (waiver), awarded for the whole length of the study right
- This scholarship is granted to all admitted applicants liable to pay tuition fees, who have not received a 100% Tuition Fee Scholarship.
