10 Informatics Degree Programs in Japan

There are two divisions “System and Sciences” and “Business and Cultural Studies”. The division of “System and Sciences” promotes research development and problem-solving by information technology and its application. The division of “Business and Cultural Studies” promotes researches related to media and social information, organization management, and decision making. The aim of our graduate school is to develop researchers and professionals through multifaceted and comprehensive researches and also to contribute to the development of informatics that opens up the future. In addition, with the establishment of the faculty of Nursing, our graduate school has incorporated “healthcare informatics” as one of our research fields, which is based on the education of the faculty of Nursing to solve the problems in an aging society with a low birthrate.

群馬大学will establish the "Faculty of Informatics" in April 2021 by integrating the education conducted in the Faculty of Social Informatics and the Department of Electronic Information Science and Engineering, Faculty of Science and Engineering, and incorporating education in the field of data science. In the Faculty of Informatics, in the realization of a sustainable society that requires harmony between science and technology and human society, we support Society 5.0 through information-based cross-disciplinary education, and have skills in IoT, big data, statistical analysis methods, etc. We will develop human resources who have knowledge of the humanities, social sciences, and natural sciences.

We train our students to become scientists and engineers with broad viewpoints on natural science, problem-solving abilities in local/global fields, and the spirit of inquisitiveness by teaching computer science as the mathematical basis for informatics and information engineering as applications of informatics in various scientific fields.

The division of “Social Informatics” will develop human resources who can create and operate various information through information analysis for solving social problems, provision of useful information to improve the convenience of our lives, expression activities with information media. Students will acquire the abilities required to create new values and succeed in society through studying media science, social science, psychology, related to society and information, etc.

The Department of Informatics and Media Design focuses on design theories and techniques relating to interface planning that connects humans with media space and media design created by audio/visual technologies.

The Faculty of Informatics was established to deal with issues in our advanced information society from both information science and human science perspectives and offers academic fields that integrate humanities and science. Through a deep understanding of information and human beings, and mastering professional IT knowledge from software to hardware, our faculty aims to cultivate a workforce with work-readiness and creative power to be utilized in the IT industry.

Information and telecommunications technology is rapidly progressing, but this progress is creating new social problems. Interdisciplinary research is necessary to achieve harmony between information technology on the one hand and society and humanity on the other.

Social informatics is a new discipline created to respond to the rapidly developing modern advanced information society. The advent of the advanced information society is causing major changes in all areas of our society, from the way we work and study, to the state of politics and economy, and the behavior of consumption and leisure. In order to understand this change in a multifaceted and comprehensive manner and to solve the various problems that arise there, the existing subdivided disciplines cannot cope with it.

You will learn computer-related expertise and technology, from programming to image / audio information processing to digital content production. Looking ahead to the IoT (Internet of Things) era, students can independently learn from the basics to applications of information technology through project-type practical education. We aim to be a computer engineer who can play an active role in every industry.

This department has three streams. In the Web Design course of study, with usability as a reference point, students are provided with the knowledge and technical skills necessary for designing web pages. In the Psychology and Life Sciences course of study, students study ways to develop intelligent computers. In the Information and Society course of study, by learning about management, production, logistics, and sales, students are equipped with the skills for information management.
