The faculty of the Department of Interior Architecture and Environmental Design is committed to educating students through distinction in teaching and research, and encouragement of innovative projects.

Industrial design involves the design of industrially produced items such as automobiles, household appliances, electronic equipment, furniture, and jewelry. Technically, this profession is closely related to disciplines such as natural sciences, ergonomics, anthropology, production and material technology and ecology. In addition to aesthetic concerns, social references, global interactions and the expectations of the users are taken into consideration. Simultaneously, economic and consumption trends and systems of competition are among the subjects of research in the design process.

Industrial design is a process of problem definition, planning and solving. Parallel to cultural, economic, political and technological movements in society, organizations serving in various sectors are in need of new approaches for creative solutions in order to determine and fulfil the ever-changing necessities for products and services.

The core elements of industrial design education at METU Department of Industrial Design are the design studio courses and the open jury system. Taking 12 hours per week each semester, design studio courses aim to deliver professional education via hands-on practice.

The program aims to provide students with in-depth theoretical and technical knowledge and high levels of practical skills in the field of industrial design. The program offers a number courses that are concerned with the knowledge of structure, materials and production techniques as well as of ergonomics, management, history and marketing. The students are also introduced to the traditional and computer-aided techniques of drawing and modelling. These courses aim to support the core element of the program, which is the design studio courses. The final year students usually work on projects in collaboration with industry. The program aims to develop the ability to cope with diverse problem areas in industrial design without restricting students to particular fields of specialisation.

In parallel to the rising importance of seamanship in recent years, yacht production has increased all over the world. Together with few countries, Turkey is in the front line especially in the production of luxury yachts. Although new shipyards, marinas are opened, magazines are published and many fairs organized every year, there is a lack of human resource needed in the design field.

Calling future urban thinkers who are curious about how we can revitalise post-industrial cities! This exciting and unique Master's programme wants to create an educational experience which recognizes and responds critically to issues of cities in different forms and stages of post-industrial transition and educates the next generation of specialists with the 21st-century skills and knowledge needed to address the challenges and opportunities of cities in transition and super diverse societies. It is the ideal program for professionals involved in the design, planning, management or evaluation of the city who want to join a vibrant knowledge and innovation community committed to rethinking more sustainable urban futures.
