11 Humanities Degree Programs in Slovakia

Central Europe is home to diverse cultural and linguistic communities. The Carpatho-Rusyns are one of these, with a rich cultural tradition and a distinct language spoken across several countries in the Carpathian region. The University of Prešov in the city of Prešov, Slovakia, announces its 14th annual three-week Studium Carpatho-Ruthenorum International Summer School for Rusyn Language and Culture to be held from June 7 – 27, 2026.

Anthropology is the only scientific discipline that studies humans from a natural science perspective, taking into account both their biological and social nature.

The third-degree (PhD) study programme in English Language and Anglophone Cultures builds on the bachelor’s and master’s levels and focuses on advanced research and interdisciplinary expertise in English philology within an intercultural and globalized context.

This interdisciplinary programme deepens students’ knowledge of English linguistics, literature, and the cultures of Anglophone countries. It offers advanced training in literature, linguistics, translation, interpreting, and intercultural communication, preparing graduates for careers in public service, international organizations, media, culture, and education.

This interdisciplinary study programme offers comprehensive training in the English language, literature, and cultures of Anglophone countries. Students develop advanced language proficiency (B2–C1 CEFR), gain knowledge in linguistics, literary history, and literary interpretation, and explore the relationship between language, culture, and society. 

The third-degree (PhD.) study programme in Systematic Philosophy focuses on scientific analytical, critical, argumentative, and interpretative procedures within specific areas of systematic philosophy.

The BA program in English and American Studies takes 3 years and it allows students to improve their English language and get acquainted with English and American history, literature, and culture. Graduates may continue in their MA studies or find interesting positions requiring knowledge of the English language and English-speaking countries.

The BA program in English and American Studies and Philosophy takes 3 years and it allows students to improve their English language, to get acquainted with the English and American history, literature and culture, to learn philosophical terminology, to explore the most important philosophical schools and problems and to develop skills of critical thinking and analysis. Graduates may continue in their MA studies or find interesting positions requiring knowledge of the English language and critical and analytical approach.

The BA program in English and American Studies and History takes 3 years and it allows students to improve their English language, to get acquainted with the English and American history, literature and culture, to explore the history of the world and Slovak history and to develop skills necessary for historical research such as critical approach and ability to associate various historical events and phenomena.

The BA program in Teaching of English Language and Literature and German Language and Literature takes 3 years and it allows students to improve their English and German language, to get acquainted with the English, American and German culture and to prepare for the profession of a teacher.

Graduates of the English language and culture study program in vocational communication masters the terminology of linguistics, literary science and professional language (eg business English, English in tourism, English in health care, English in science and technology, legal English, etc.), controls work with information technologies and acquire basic knowledge in management and management. They also have basic knowledge of translation strategies and techniques of simultaneous and consecutive interpreting and has acquired knowledge of intercultural communication behavior.
