UK Universities Advocate for Inflation-Linked Tuition Fee Increases

Currently, tuition fees are capped at £9,250 per year, but unfortunately, they haven't kept pace with rising inflation. According to the report, this cap is effectively worth only about £5,924 today when adjusted for inflation, whereas it would need to be around £12,723 to match inflationary increases since the freeze in 2017.

From paying staff and maintaining campus facilities to updating technology and student services, universities are grappling with rising expenses. Many argue that the current fees no longer reflect the true cost of delivering high-quality education. The report also mentions that per-student funding is at its lowest point since 2004.

• A modest tuition fee increase tied to inflation, "not to address the funding shortfall, but to allow fee income to maintain its real-terms value over time"
• Restoring the teaching grant, which has experienced considerable cuts in recent years

In the future, they want to collaborate with the government on broader reforms that will help stabilize the higher education system and explore new funding models.
