The Doctoral Program in Rehabilitation Sciences (PDCR) has as major aim to prepare students with advanced and integrative training in Rehabilitation, and place the student at the forefront of Health Sciences (HS) research. The training offered is oriented towards the current requirements in health-related fields, including Precision Medicine, and to technologically advanced domains. We expect to develop innovative conceptual and methodological tools that response to HS societal challenges. The PDCR also capacitates students to communicate and transfer scientific knowledge and expertise between the academia and healthcare institutions, to invigorate the Health sector. In order to do so, the PDCR has a group of core common courses that provide competences in HS research, a group of specialized ones on advanced formation on Rehabilitation; and a set of optional curricular units that enables the student to develop a curricular path more adapted to its interests. The PDCR lecturing languages are Portuguese and English.

The Doctoral Program in Gerontology and Geriatrics (UP/UA) specializes in training professionals for direct intervention, policy-making, service planning, and research with aging populations. The program focuses on analyzing aging and longevity, acquiring research skills, addressing health, psychological, and social needs, and conducting original research to advance knowledge in the field.

The Doctoral Program in Gerontology and Geriatrics (PDGG) aims to respond to the increasing need of advanced training in gerontology and geriatrics. Its major goal is to provide specialized training on direct intervention, policy definitions, service planning and research with older adults, involving the collaboration of national and international specialists. The PDGG is taught in association with the University of Porto, namely with the Abel Salazar Biomedical Sciences Institute, the Faculty of Medicine, the Faculty of Sciences Nutrition, the Faculty of Sports, and the Faculty of Humanities. It is therefore a conjoint degree awarded by both institutions – University of Aveiro (UA) and University of Porto (UP).

Generic objectives defined for the study programs: Medical research, particularly clinical research, is a key activity for the development of innovation in health. By its nature and ethical issues, it is highly legislated, it requires complex infrastructures and different basic research and is usually done in accumulation of functions with clinical activity. The Master's in Applied Social Gerontology is aimed at graduates from Social and Human Sciences and Health areas who are already working or intend to work in the field of gerontology. It is an indispensable training for those who are in the process of or intend to occupy management/coordination positions in services and institutions for the elderly.

The creation of the 2nd cycle of studies in Gerontology aims to offer an interdisciplinary scientific training capable of providing future teachers with the theoretical, methodological and practical skills necessary to respond to the problems and challenges of old age and aging in Portuguese society and to promote the development of advanced research on aging, training and intervention with the elderly and their families, namely in close articulation with NEISES-C3I.
