Health by Design is a graduation track of the Master of Arts in Fine Art & Design at Avans. During the two-year programme, you co-design with students from various disciplines in practice-led design research. And in art thinking projects in health and wellbeing. As a health designer, you'll develop intellectual and practical skills to achieve a transdisciplinary and co-design approach. Adding value to complex health and wellbeing challenges, and propelling your career in a rapidly evolving field.

This joint Master's program will equip you with the necessary competencies to play a key role in the emerging field of transfusion medicine. Its current concept includes both transfusions of blood components and hematopoietic transplants, cellular and tissue therapy, and immunotherapy. Areas that are integrated into the curriculum of this Master's.

What does it mean to be healthy, not just physically, but mentally and socially too? In the Health, Cognition & Behavior cluster, you explore the science behind human well-being. From how the brain processes emotions and decisions, to how the body responds to illness or stress, in this cluster, you dive into what helps people thrive and what happens when things go wrong.

The Core Course in Public Health and Health Equity is a 3 months course that prepares you to systematically analyse and address complex public health issues, covering epidemiology, health system aspects, and broader social determinants of health. The course focuses on health equity in low-resource settings and high-resource settings with disadvantaged populations. It can be taken as a stand-alone course or as part of the Master of Science in Public Health and Health Equity. It forms also part of the post-graduate training programme for physicians leading to a diploma as MD Global Health (AIGT).

Planning and programming are major components of programme management by any health system actor such as governments, national and international non-governmental organisations and the private sector: being able to plan well and set up effective programmes is a key competence of any health programme manager and health sector consultant.

Master Psychology: Health and Social Psychology studies behaviour and behavioural change using methods from clinical and social psychology. The main focus is on understanding how people’s personalities, cognitions and social environment influence their health and social functioning.

The Master Health Promotion focuses on understanding and influencing behaviour and environments that shape it, empowering to create lasting change at individual, community, and societal levels. You’ll learn to design and lead initiatives that promote health and well-being across diverse settings.

Nature and nurture: how do they interact and correlate? Is health and wellbeing in our genes or is the environment the most important source of differences between people? And can we use DNA to predict our health? Both twin studies and molecular genetic studies have highlighted the influence of our genetic code on behavior and health. To adequately understand and influence behavior and health, we need to increase our knowledge of the way our genes play their part, by themselves and when interacting with our environment.

‘Health, Ageing and Society’ is the new name for the Master’s Vitality and Ageing. We are ready for change – are you?! The name reflects the broad contents of the study and it better reflects what the programme stands for. Approximately 150 students have graduated since the start of the programme in 2016. Are you passionate about physical activity, ageing, health and sports? And would you like to know more about how exercise and nutrition influences health, performance and disease? Then Human Movement Sciences could just be the programme for you. It covers all aspects of the relationship between physical activity and health – from patients trying to get better, to individuals just trying to stay fit, to top athletes aiming for the pinnacle of their sport. The programme offers a great deal of variety, with courses covering themes as diverse as nutrition, muscle & brain function, energy production and metabolic profiling. Because of this variety of courses and an individual 4-5 month research-driven internship/placement, you can pursue your own interests within the programme. Upon graduation, you will be well-prepared to work as a researcher, product developer, exercise scientist or trainer at, for example, a rehabilitation institute or a major sporting club.

How to break a speed record on a bike at an altitude of 1400 meters? How can you help people with impaired motor functioning? From the latest developments in sports training to new approaches to rehabilitation, this Master’s program provides state-of-the-art insights into the ways in which human performance can be enhanced. From biomechanics to psychology. From exercise physiology to neurorehabilitation. And from muscle function to motor development.

If you choose Physiotherapy, you will learn all about how people move and how to help people of all ages and backgrounds with different mobility problems. You will ensure that your knowledge, treatment skills and attention will help people regain healthy movement so they can live healthily and actively. Whether you teach nurses how to cope better with heavy physical labour or you are treating an elderly man with a painful knee, as a physiotherapist you work with different target groups and different methodologies to get people moving healthily again.

Public health epidemiology is the art and science of preventing disease, prolonging life, and promoting health through the organized efforts of society. Whereas clinicians and general practitioners provide care for individuals, public health interventions are directed at whole populations.
