Earth Science is an all-embracing term for the multiple sciences related to the planet Earth. The B.A. degree in Geology with a major in Earth Science is designed to integrate all the Earth sciences in a systems approach to understanding the Earth. This includes incorporating and integrating subjects such as oceanography, meteorology and astronomy. The emphasis is on the preparation of individuals to work in a wide range of professional public sector service careers where preparation in Earth science and communication of science to non-scientific audiences is a requirement or an asset. This includes the preparation of Earth science teachers.

The Earth Science major is one of two programs housed in the Department of Earth Science and Geography. The Earth Science degree is a cross-disciplinary program that trains students for careers involving earth system science, which broadly includes the physical science behind the interactions of the lithosphere, atmosphere, and hydrosphere. The Earth Science program also examines the contribution of those systems to natural landscapes and geological hazards, during the modern era and through geological time. Importantly, it also considers the relationship of human populations to these geosystems.

A profound knowledge of the Earth’s system is essential to tackle climate change issues. As a Master’s student of Earth Sciences, you will learn to find sustainable solutions for present and future challenges regarding our planet and climate. You will study the natural processes and cycles of the Earth’s system within and between rock, soil, water, living things and air. You will quantify the magnitude and rate of these processes in both space and in time. Earth Sciences students look at the influence of humanity on the Earth’s Systems to address questions such as: What can past and present conditions tell us about the future? How can we use Earth system knowledge to effectively address global challenges such as climate change?

Geology is the study of the Earth and includes aspects related to its formation, composition, structure and processes. South Africa is known for its large reserves of gold, platinum, chromium, vanadium and other metal ores, as well as substantial diamond and coal reserves. A mere hour’s drive from UP takes one to the Karoo coalfields, the site where the Cullinan diamond was discovered, the Bushveld platinum mines and the gold mines of the Witwatersrand. South Africa also has some of the Earth’s oldest well-exposed geology and significant fossils informing us about the history of the planet. UP is well situated within easy reach of the mining and applied geological industries and offers a strong program in the applied fields of economic geology, structural geology and mechanics, and engineering geology and hydrogeology. Candidates who successfully complete this program qualify for professional registration as geological scientists. The program requires an appreciation for mathematics and chemistry. A love for the Earth and working outdoors, and an interest in geology or geomorphology will be beneficial. Depending on your personality, you can decide how you would like to divide your time between working in the field and working in the office.
