The Department of Modern Languages & Linguistics offers instruction in three languages: French, Japanese and Spanish (beginner to advanced). Join us, improve your communication skills in French, and discover French culture. We offer Core French Classes and Scientific French Language in an immersive environment in small groups which assures an effective progression. Courses are designed for all learners from beginners (A1) through advanced levels (B2-C1), in accordance with the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFRL). The program also includes cohesion activities. Students unable to come to France for this program will have the possibility to follow the classes online.

A study of French as an Associate of Arts expands individual consciousness contributes to understanding the history and development of many countries and provides the communication skills necessary for a variety of careers. French is offered in the University of Limerick at advanced level, and our objective for students is the achievement of outstanding linguistic and cultural competence over the course of the degree programme. To this end, all French modules are taught through the medium of French, using a full range of appropriate resources and technologies. This BA (Honours) in Arts and Humanities (French) degree gives you the freedom to combine the study of different subject areas in the arts and humanities. You'll develop a specialism in French, exploring aspects of the language and its cultures around the world. You can combine this with a second specialism or choose to develop broader interests in art history, classical studies, creative writing, English language, English literature, history, other modern languages, music, philosophy, and religious studies.

The French major offers two areas of study: French and Francophone Studies, French Language and Linguistics. As the student progresses within the major, the specialization of either French or Francophone studies or linguistics will begin through strategic course selections. Students will typically also choose to double major within a different discipline to build a holistic degree plan.
