This Foundation Degree aims to develop knowledge and understanding of the wide and varied social, political, and economic environments that community and public services operate within. You will have the opportunity to listen to, and network with, serving public service practitioners and members of other community and public service organizations through visits, volunteering, guest lectures, and work-based delivery.

Science is wondrous, and the pursuit of knowledge is a calling. But science is also done by people, who have biases and flaws and work in a structure that can promote inequity.

This course will survey the major issues and controversies facing artists and arts organizations today, including how to treat intellectual property, the role of art in developing cities, branding, the influence of digital technology on art, the history and impact of celebrity, censorship, diversity, and transgression in/on the arts.

Students will explore the art and craft of long-form storytelling, writing their own 3,000-5,000-word pieces.

International journalists report on communities, cultures, places, and nations that they frequently don’t come from. Their journalism is what introduces their audiences to communities they wouldn’t otherwise know and can greatly shape how their audiences think about these communities’ members.

This course will give students in the urban concentration the opportunity to do investigative reporting on behalf of local city and ethnic media looking for in-depth coverage of unsolved problems in their communities.

This course will introduce students to conceptualizing, reporting, writing, and producing stories across multiple platforms–from websites to mobile devices.

This class is a platform-agnostic introduction to the editorial and technical skills of producing video.
