Emerson College’s on-campus MFA in Film and Media Art equips you with the skills to explore narrative film, documentary, experimental media, installation art, and interactive media. Collaborating with a diverse group of students and faculty on our Boston campus, you will enhance your knowledge of film, audio, video, and interactive media production. The program encourages you to use image and sound to challenge, inform, entertain, and persuade through both traditional and emerging media forms. Housed in the Department of Visual and Media Arts within the School of the Arts, this program offers three distinct entry points based on your experience and ranges from two to three years in length. This flexibility allows students from various backgrounds to inspire each other’s artistic growth. Upon admission, we will work with you to develop a personalized study plan aligned with your professional and educational goals.

Graduate prepared for success in a highly competitive industry, trained in writing, production management, cinematography, editing, sound design, and more—along with 10 additional specialty courses focused on specific production skills. You’ll find yourself immersed in filmmaking with state-of-the-art equipment and expert instruction provided by faculty mentors with professional experience.

Our exciting specialist course will enable you to develop your imaginative and creative skills while giving you a sound knowledge and understanding of animation processes, techniques and critical theory. Commercial animation is a rapidly growing and vibrant industry, encompassing a broad range of rewarding and fascinating creative job opportunities. Our strong emphasis on creative practice will help you to develop your skills in drawing and design, along with the imaginative development and innovation of ideas expressed sequentially. These skills, together with the professional practice aspects of the course, will ensure that you have the confidence and expertise to succeed in the industry, whether as a producer, technician, designer or manager. You’ll also develop the transferable and cognitive skills necessary for lifelong personal and professional development. Throughout the course, there are opportunities for you to take part in national and international competitions and film festivals. Our course is delivered by a large team of experienced animation practitioners, staff and industry visitors, and you’ll work in dedicated specialist animation studios with facilities for blue screen, rostrum animation, CGI, drawing, stop-frame, film, photography, set building, sound and video. Successful animators need to be flexible and able to adapt to changing cultures and new initiatives, and our course seeks to reflect this fluidity. You’ll rapidly develop your own practice in animation, and will be encouraged to work on shared initiatives. Based at our Harrow Campus – home to the Westminster School of Arts and the Westminster School of Media and Communications – you’ll work alongside students from film, photography, music, fashion and journalism, in a unique creative hothouse.

The Associate Degree in Fine and Applied Arts offers a wide variety of courses to acquaint students with the creation of and performance in the arts from a global perspective. The courses in this area examine the nature of the fine and applied arts through analysis, synthesis, composition, performance, and technical development. Students will develop techniques appropriate to the art form, engage in the production and performance of the arts, examine aesthetic valuing, and participate in creative expression. This area of emphasis is designed for students interested in exploring various art forms, including digital media, creative writing, dance, film, graphic design, music, photography, communication studies, television, theatre, video, and the visual arts.

The MA in Fine Arts can be completed with an emphasis in Drawing and Painting. This degree program provides students with the creative and technical skills needed to thrive in today’s art world. Students will leave with professional-level portfolios and an understanding of the business of art.

The objective of the degree is to train professionals capable of identifying, understanding and developing the problems and processes of art, through artistic creation and its analysis. An emphasis on Fine Arts provides the student with an understanding of the practices and theories of traditional and contemporary two- and three-dimensional studio arts and an introduction to the history of Western art.

Come and conduct research at the Academy of Fine Arts, where art and the artist are the focal points. Research subjects – whether embodied in the research question or the method, material, or objective of research – cover the meaning, practices, techniques, and methods of art, as well as the principles and institutional arrangements that determine the production, reception, training, and application of art.

This studio-based MA Fine Art course allows you to develop your creative potential in a cross-disciplinary environment, using specialist equipment and drawing on the expertise of practicing artists and skilled technicians at our Locksbrook campus. Working with students from across the Bath School of Art, Film and Media, and School of Design, you’ll study a range of approaches including painting, sculpture, live art, and photography, to further your skills and knowledge in your specialist area. You’ll identify your position as an artist, develop the appropriate technical skills, and learn how to promote and exhibit your work professionally.
