The Centre for Creative Industries, Media, and Screen Studies (CCIMSS) invites applications for disciplinary and interdisciplinary research in film and screen studies with particular reference to Africa, Asia and the Near and Middle East. The Centre’s geographical focus on film/screen industries and movements beyond the dominant Western ‘global’ Hollywood and European economies of production, distribution and exhibition, makes the Centre unique in its approach.

The MA in Film Studies will let you learn the history and theory of film and gain a global perspective on cinema. You’ll develop in-depth knowledge of the most influential theories and approaches to understanding film. You’ll also find out about the latest debates and concerns around the industry.

The MA in Film Studies course has been designed for students who want to deepen their knowledge of world cinemas and media. It offers an extensive range of options covering all aspects of film and media including theory, history, style, representation, spectatorship, philosophy, and critical media practice (filmmaking).

The Doctoral study program comprises a thesis that makes an original contribution to the field of Film and Television Studies on a topic selected in consultation with the Departmental Chairperson.

The Film and Video Studies degree is the first multidisciplinary undergraduate degree in Virginia focusing on cinematic arts production and film theory and history with core courses in ethics, business, writing for the moving image, fiction, documentary, interactive storytelling, and episodic television.

The Bachelor's Degree in Film, Television, and Media Studies offers in-depth knowledge of audiovisuals in the digital era, stimulating students’ critical thinking by honing their aesthetic and creative skills. Its goal is to train professionals in audiovisual production and distribution, television, radio, cultural management, audience analysis, and online audiovisual content management.

Our Film program specializes in film and media studies, film history and criticism, and the new global media culture. Individuals may obtain an A.A. in Film, which trains them in the history, theory, and craft of diverse styles of film art.
