The Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering offers a Masters in Engineering (MEng) course-based degree program that is structured to advance knowledge of practical interest in specialized fields and to provide students with the skills necessary to address key technological challenges. Our MEng program provides opportunities to gain industry-related experience through co-op placements and industry-sponsored projects. MEng is a one-year program. Students are required to complete 10 courses OR 8 courses and a project.

Environmental engineers apply their knowledge of the natural sciences – chemistry, biology, and microbiology – with their expertise in civil engineering to design municipal services and solve environmental problems. As an environmental engineer, you might be involved in performing an environmental impact assessment, or in designing or managing systems for water distribution and collection, water treatment plants, solid waste handling and processing facilities, landfills, and air treatment plants.

Civil engineers solve environmental and societal problems and help make communities safer. You’ll learn to conceive, design, plan and build essential, sustainable infrastructures, including power and water supply structures and waste treatment facilities, high- and low-rise buildings, airports, roads and dams. Choose from specializations in Structural, Transportation or Environmental Engineering, along with an optional paid co-operative internship and an optional specialization in Management Sciences to enhance your degree.

The Graduate Diploma in Environmental/Sustainability Education is offered jointly by the Faculty of Environmental Studies and the Faculty of Education; this diploma will allow educators in schools, community organizations, cultural institutions and advocacy groups to develop expertise and participate in research in the field of environmental and sustainability education.

Environmental Technician students are trained as entry-level practitioners in the use of environmental sampling, monitoring and testing equipment and information technology tools and will be familiar with standard operating procedures for conducting environmental projects. Students are provided with applied knowledge of health, safety and environmental legislative requirements, environmental management systems, and the basic principles of ecosystem-based management for sustainability.
