The Economics program is one of the most traditional undergraduate programs at UFSC. Its creation dates back to 1943, prior to the foundation of the university, and it is the main reference in Economic Studies in the state of Santa Catarina. Economics graduates can work in a wide range of contexts, offering advice to companies, working for government agencies and development banks, in financial analysis, economic-financial audits and in the analysis of economic conditions.

The Graduate Program in Economics (PPGECON) was created in 2010, having formed its first class through Internal Selection in 2011.

The Graduate Program in Economics at the Federal University of Espírito Santo (PPGEco-UFES), through its Masters and Doctorate courses in Economics, has the general objective of training professionals able to work with academic research in educational institutions, as well as in private companies and in the public sector, through a strong immersion in Economic Theory and Quantitative Methods, with due attention to the events and updates of the Capixaba, Brazilian and International Economy. It also provides the necessary knowledge for students to enter Postdoctoral Programs in the country and abroad. PPGEco-UFES Master's and Doctorate in Economics students acquire analytical and academic skills that give them comparative advantages in the most varied fields of professional practice.

Metodista's Economic Sciences course received grade 4 (on a scale of 1 to 5) in the latest MEC assessment and seeks to train professionals committed to the study of the Brazilian reality and aware of the importance of the interrelationships that link economic phenomena to the social and , in particular, of its role as an agent of these relationships. In this way, students receive a solid theoretical, historical and instrumental training. According to the institution's philosophy, training seeks to combine technique with ethics and prepare students to work in different areas of the public or private sector. The course, with evening classes, can be completed in four years.
