The two-year diploma program is a specialized and inclusive program for international students designed to cultivate the skills and knowledge needed for a successful career in early childhood education. The Mount is proud to offer the only university-level Child & Youth Study program in Atlantic Canada. Students in our program engage in practical training and theoretical explorations in child and youth work, early childhood education, as well as early intervention and inclusive development. As strong supporters of experiential learning we are pleased to offer our undergraduates four supervised practicum placements which enable our students to apply the knowledge that they have learned in the classroom to hands-on, real-world experience. We also offer a Master of Arts in Child and Youth Study.

Employment prospects are very good in this area and the placement rate is 90%. Graduates can work in many types of existing childcare services such as in family-run childcare centers, school-based child care, kindergarten schools and daycares. The student’s versatility is an important element because they must be able to practice in each of these care settings.

The Childhood and Youth Studies (CYS) department at King's focuses on the often-overlooked subject of childhood from an interdisciplinary perspective. Thus, we look at childhood from sociological, anthropological, historical, and geographical perspectives. We discuss issues such as child competencies, questions about our understandings of childhood, and an exploration of the changing status of children and childhood in Canada and internationally.

Students in the Early Childcare Assistant program explore the challenging role of care provider and the rewarding involvement of being with children in a childcare or early learning center. Theoretical, in-class training is complemented by an in-depth comprehensive placement in a childcare facility. Early Childcare Assistants plan and aide with mealtime, supervise children at playtime and during rest periods. Early Childcare Assistants also lead children in activities through stories and songs, preparing craft material, preparing and serving snacks, and guiding and assisting children in the development of proper hygiene habits.

Students will graduate ready to thrive as part of a multidisciplinary team that works with infants and children up to 12 years old. You will have the opportunity to nurture learning and imagination to help these children to transition successfully to the school system. The Early Learning and Child Care Diploma is an upward step from our ELCC Certificate program and provides students with the knowledge, skills and competencies to pursue professional, supervisory positions in childcare. Study involves an ongoing forum of networking with other experienced early childhood professionals and projects tailored to students’ specific interests and requirements.
