PhD by research via Distance Learning is awarded after successfully completing a theoretical research specialization. This research is presented in the form of a doctoral thesis. The PhD (Doctor of Philosophy) is the only doctoral degree that can be achieved through distance learning. The main requirement for a PhD online through distance learning is to present and discuss a thesis of at least 100 pages for review and evaluation by an academic committee at Selinus University. This research program reveals the enormous potential of clinical psychology to help individuals, groups and societies. The candidate should develop a final thesis that explores an aspect of knowledge of this stimulating field from a clinical perspective that integrates psychology, biology and chemistry focused on the treatment of different pathologies. He will also have to face the roles and responsibilities of the contemporary clinical psychologist, his scientific bases and his theoretical orientations.

The PhD Program in Psychology at the University of Aveiro aims to prepare highly qualified students for autonomous research work in the various fields of application of Psychology (education, organizations, forensic, health, etc.), thus addressing the recruitment needs of academia, public institutions, associations and non-profit organizations, and the business sector. Taking into account the legal requirements to obtain a PhD degree (Decree-Law no. 74/2006 of March 24), the general goals of the Doctoral Program in Psychology are the following:

Aim of the Programme is to prepare highly qualified scientists and teaching staff in various areas of psychology (general, clinical, development, personality, social/organisational psychology) through improvement of their research work organisation, management and implementation skills based on greater in-depth understanding of psychology theories and methodology in at least two sub-areas of psychology, skills in national and international cooperation with other specialists in the area, and through preparation of an original scientific research study (dissertation study) to be defended to acquire an internationally recognised doctoral degree in psychology. The programme additionally offers specialisation in cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) to the students studying for their doctoral degree in clinical psychology. These additional studies are aimed at improvement of their professional skills in psychotherapy (within the Baltic States, such specialisation at the doctoral level is available only at the University of Latvia).

This PhD program in Clinical Psychology is interdisciplinary, enabling students through the design and implementation of the dissertation to become experts in both research and clinical practice. Topics to be addressed in a dissertation should delve into therapeutic approaches such as cognitive-behavioural therapy, psychoanalysis and other psychotherapeutic methods. Also deal with assessment and diagnosis to determine mental disorders or behavioural problems of patients, as well as the study of advanced research methodologies and statistical analysis to design, conduct and interpret scientific studies. Finally, develop areas related to mental disorders, such as depression, anxiety, schizophrenia and others, including their aetiology and treatment, while also delving into the ethical and legal guidelines governing psychological practice.

This PhD Program in Emotion Psychology (the study of affective processes such as emotions, mood, feelings and its relation to attention, memory, decision, reasoning, creativity) is innovative and unique in Europe and combines knowledge brought by Psychology and several other fields of Science to provide an updated solid theoretical and methodological background in the study of emotional processes. It meets the exponentially growing interest of the last couple of decades in Emotion after the findings that emotion is key to decision-making and that affective processes in the brain create an implicit layer of influence on the most varied aspects of human mental activity, behaviour, and creations. A strong branch of research is focusing on emotion regulation and positive emotions, forming a strong basis for applied interventions towards psychological well-being and health as well as the betterment of the workplace, education, and human developmental contexts.

The program is designed for students who wish to pursue a higher degree in the broad area of applied psychology within a framework of human lifespan development (human cognitive development and human career development) and with a research focus on cognitive development, decision-making, and mental health in the information age.

The PhD Psychology is a 36-month full-time research degree conducted under the supervision of a faculty member culminating with submission of a research thesis.

With our partner university, Liverpool John Moores University, Alef Trust offers a collaborative PhD in Applied Transpersonal Psychology. The collaborative basis of the PhD means that you will conduct your research under guidance from supervisors from both Alef Trust and LJMU. Doctoral study is designed as a preparation of researchers in the field of educational and school psychology, who will participate in the development of psychological theory and research through independent creative activities. The doctoral study will deepen the knowledge in the field with the application of Czech and foreign knowledge and research results will further extend the methodological and research skills and competencies of doctoral students, as well as presentation skills, with an emphasis on educational and school psychology, other psychological disciplines and social sciences. The focus of the doctoral study is the dissertation, which has the character of the original scientific work. Through the dissertation thesis of the empirical-theoretical or theoretical research, the doctoral student gains new knowledge on the studied topic and thus enriches its scientific description and conceptualization. The dissertation is involved in the development of the field in the national and international context. The aim of the study is to prepare researchers who, in the case of a further academic career at the university, get involved in pedagogic, scientific and research activities in educational and school psychology, possibly also in related psychological disciplines and other social sciences; in case of practical psychological activity the workers will theorize the given field and encompass it into a broader professional context. It is a program without specialization.

The Doctor of Psychology (Ph.D., DPsy) goal is to prepare students for the general practice of professional clinical psychology including education and training regarding the broader social and systemic factors that contribute to human dysfunction such as poverty, oppression, and marginalization. The program will help students develop evaluation techniques and assessment, psychological foundations, remediation and intervention procedures, and program evaluation and research.

This doctoral program aims to train researchers in the areas of Basic and Applied Neuroscience, Clinical Psychology and Psychiatry, prioritizing interdisciplinarity. With this perspective, the program includes researchers assigned to different areas of knowledge in the fields of Neurobiology, Cognitive Neuroscience, Clinical and Health Psychology and Psychiatry. It is an interuniversity program, jointly organized by the Universities of Santiago de Compostela (which coordinates it), A Coruña and Vigo.
