he National Joint PhD Programme in Nautical Operations is organised as a joint degree between the following four national higher education institutions offering professional maritime education: UiT the Arctic University of Norway (UiT), University of South-Eastern Norway (USN), Western Norway University of Applied Sciences (HVL), Norwegial University of Science and Technology (NTNU)

The PhD programme in Health Sciences is a structured research education and consists of independent research work with a doctoral thesis (150 credits) and a training component (30 credits). The programme is standardized to a three-year duration, extended to four years for mandatory duties. Part-time study is possible, with a requirement that at least 50% of the working hours will be dedicated to the PhD programme.

The PhD program in the humanities and social sciences offers a research programme that qualifies candidates for work in academia or other areas in which there is a strong demand for scientific insight and analytical thinking. The research programme is offered in a range of subjects and has different areas of specialisation.

The PhD program in Engineering Science covers fields of study at all institutes within the faculty. Our researchers and research groups collaborate directly with industry and other research environments. We integrate sustainable principles in the development and improvement of technologies and solutions, including, but not limited to; energy and efficiency, building and infrastructure, production and logistics, product design, geometric analysis and computations.

The PhD program in Science offers research education in several disciplines, including physics, geosciences, computer science, chemistry, technology, mathematics, statistics, bio-informatics, and molecular- and structural biology. In order to become a PhD candidate you have to apply for a research fellow position that is advertised and get employed, or be employed at an external institution that will fund the PhD study.

The PhD programme in social science embraces disciplines like business, economics, marked, administration and resource management. It is also possible to conduct interdisciplinary projects. USN offers a Ph.D. in Research training in pedagogical resources and learning processes in kindergarten and school. The program was accredited in autumn 2012.
