The research thesis of this PhD should investigate the reasons why modern society relies on stable and readily available energy supplies. The Ph.D. in Infrastructure and Environmental Systems is an interdisciplinary program emphasizing innovations in design, analysis, construction and operation of civil, energy and environmental infrastructure. It also provides skills to scientifically analyze sustainability issues and explore renewable resources. Several national and international universities collaborate with the program on faculty and student exchanges, and joint supervision of doctoral students. 

Doctoral training at the School of Chemistry and Environmental Sciences aims to educate specialists capable of independent and creative work in key areas of chemistry and environmental science, in line with the needs of a market economy. The programme provides a strong foundation for obtaining a doctoral degree.

The purpose of the Ph.D. in Environmental Management is to provide qualifying students with an in-depth understanding and integrated knowledge of advanced applicable theory in the field of specialization.

The U.Porto Doctoral Program in Environmental Contamination and Toxicology, offered by ICBAS, FCUP, FFUP, CIIMAR, i3S, and REQUIMTE, aims to train experts to address environmental challenges from climate change and population growth. PhD graduates will innovate research, technologies, and solutions to mitigate climate impacts, ensure essential goods, reduce pollution, and promote sustainability, biodiversity conservation, and global health.

In this research programme, students should implement updates of all aspects of environmental engineering including tools, techniques and regulations. Air quality control, water sanitation and its distribution, water treatment, waste pollutants sources and effects should also be covered. Candidates may draw attention to solid waste collection and transfer operations, hazardous waste remediation and assessment of environmental impacts.

The International PhD Program in Agricultural and Environmental Sciences of the Department of Agriculture, Food, Environment and Forestry (DAGRI) combines expertise from many disciplines in the agro-environmental field aimed at training researchers, enabling them to carry out qualified scientific activities in the field of plant and animal production, considering also aspects of eco-sustainability, climate change and recovery of polluted and degraded areas in order to restore their agricultural cultivation capabilities.
