This field of study or specialization covers the full scope of climate-related issues from a policy perspective.

The PhD in Environmental Studies at City University of Hong Kong is a research-intensive doctoral degree offered through the School of Energy and Environment (SEE), designed to develop independent researchers capable of advancing scientific understanding and practical solutions to complex environmental challenges. The programme’s research agenda centres on critical global issues such as air and water pollution control and management, climate change modelling, mitigation and adaptation, and the transformation of waste into energy and resources. These areas reflect the school’s commitment to environmental sustainability and scientific innovation, and provide a broad foundation for doctoral investigation.

The Ph.D. in Infrastructure and Environmental Systems is an interdisciplinary program emphasizing innovations in design, analysis, construction and operation of civil, energy and environmental infrastructure. It also provides skills to scientifically analyze sustainability issues and explore renewable resources. Several national and international universities collaborate with the program on faculty and student exchanges, and joint supervision of doctoral students. 

Provide the knowledge, techniques and systemic vision required to produce scientifically relevant contributions involving the design, analysis, control and operation of systems that support energy, material and information flows, in particular regarding, conversion transport, storage and use of energy, taking into account the availability of natural resources and their relation to climate change, including the study of their mitigation and resilience factors for adaptation to climate change. The main characteristic of this doctoral program is its holistic view, integrating areas of engineering and environment with those of economics and management, providing an analysis of the energy systems in the perspective of sustainable development. It is also an objective of the doctoral program to gradually qualify students for the autonomous development of research and development work by integrating them into research teams with a special emphasis on the preparation and elaboration of the thesis.

The PhD in Sustainability at City University of Hong Kong is a research-based doctoral degree offered through the School of Energy and Environment that prepares students to undertake original, high-impact research on pressing sustainability challenges. This programme is grounded in an interdisciplinary research framework that addresses key global priorities such as urban sustainability for smart cities, energy and sustainable economics, low-carbon innovation, and policy design and analysis. By focusing on these areas, the programme encourages doctoral candidates to develop deep insights into how sustainable development goals can be understood and advanced through rigorous scholarship, innovative thinking, and evidence-based solutions.

The Doctoral School has eight Ph.D. programs that encompass all the branches and interfaces of forestry and wildlife management sciences. Education and research at the Doctoral School are pursued in the basic and applied sciences, related to forests, wildlife, and nature. The knowledge and the degree gained at the Doctoral School are a good reference when applying for leading positions in higher education institutions, research institutes, forestry, wildlife management, and conservation.

The PhD in Climate Change and Sustainable Development Policies is a joint initiative between the Universidade de Lisboa and the NOVA University of Lisbon. It had its first intake in the academic year 2009-2010. It is part of an interdisciplinary network focusing on the environmental and social sciences, and works in partnership with the University of East Anglia

The study program focuses on the physical nature of a wide range of atmospheric phenomena and processes, which, however, also have interdisciplinary applications in atmospheric chemistry, oceanology, physical geography, environmental sciences, etc. It is a unique program at Charles University that provides a comprehensive view of the dynamic system of the Earth's atmosphere in a broad interdisciplinary context. Even within the Czech Republic, it is the only program offering education in atmospheric physics, meteorology, and climatology. From a methodological point of view, a wide range of theoretical, experimental, and computational physics applications are used interactively and complementarily. The program does not contain specializations.

The Ph.D. in Biodiversity and Conservation demands a very high level of intellectual, theoretical, and practical specialized scientific knowledge and insight into problems related to the field of study and of the application of advanced experimental methods and techniques of the modern research, as well as of fundamental scientific and academic values in generating, processing, interpreting and presenting research data orally and in written form.

PhD by research via Distance Learning is awarded after successfully completing a theoretical research specialization. This research is presented in the form of a doctoral thesis. The PhD (Doctor of Philosophy) is the only doctoral degree that can be achieved through distance learning. The main requirement for a PhD online through distance learning is to present and discuss a thesis of at least 100 pages for review and evaluation by an academic committee at Selinus University. The aim of this research step should cover the theoretical foundations of sustainable agriculture, the design of alternative production systems and technologies and the management of parasitic insects, pathogens and weeds. Guiding and providing solutions through the main agricultural topics, such as plant sciences, agricultural technology and engineering and farm management, using research results and examples from both the developed and undeveloped world.
