Thi program blends academic theory with practical skills to equip students with the comprehensive knowledge they need in order to find a job in the competitive field of film and games industry. Students learn the professional skills necessary to become a film or video games director. Students will work on each others' productions with different crews, directors, cinematographers, actors, producers, game designers and receive a practical experience that helps to prepare upon entering the film and video game industry. Each student makes 4 films /exercises during the academic year plus the end of year film, all in close cooperation with other students of different specialization. Teamwork and cooperation are our fundamentals.

MA Directing is designed for you to develop the skills and understanding needed to work as a director in today’s multi-faceted screen industries. Today’s director must be knowledgeable about industry, entrepreneurial, multi-skilled, and able to bring a deep understanding of story and performance in different contexts.

This MA Directing will give you contemporary, practical training to become an integral part of the next generation of theatre directors.  Through skills classes and project-based learning, you will be given the time, resources, and rehearsal room access you need to develop your craft. 

The two-year master’s studies allow more freedom than bachelor’s studies, providing opportunities to engage in independent artistic work. You will actively participate in the planning and implementation of your own studies, as well as in developing the field of art that the degree program represents.

The master’s degree provides students with the knowledge and techniques required to direct audiovisual works in any format. Students will learn about the director’s job and perform this role and the ones of the other members of the direction department during the preproduction, shooting, and postproduction processes.

After successful completion of their sophomore year, students in the 120-credit B.F.A. in Theatre Arts: Acting program or the B.A. in Theatre Arts program, with the appropriate prerequisites, may elect to apply to pursue a concentration in either directing or playwriting. Transfer students who wish to apply for this option may be required to take additional preparatory coursework.

AFI gives Directing Fellows the crucial time, space, and resources to craft their own distinct voice while guaranteeing them the opportunity to direct over the course of two years.
