The Health Care Assistant Internationally Educated program is designed for students whose first language is not EnglishA Health Care Assistant (HCA) are prepared to work in both healthcare facilities and community agencies. In these roles they are important and valued members of the health care team.

This program prepares individuals with previous health care assistant education and experience for practice in BC. It is designed to address individual needs as identified through the NCAS (Nursing Community Assessment Service) HCA Competency Assessment.

Licensed to administer patient care, most BC paramedics are PCPs, and they handle the majority of 9-1-1 calls. The role of a paramedic varies widely across the world, as emergency medical services (EMS) providers operate with many different models of care. In the Anglo-American model, paramedics are autonomous decision-makers. However, in some countries, such as the United Kingdom and Australia, the paramedic role has developed into an autonomous health profession, which is Canada’s direction.

The Health Unit Clerk program prepares the student to gain employment in: hospitals, clinics, insurance companies, public health care agencies and long-term care facilities. In the workplace, they will perform non-clinical tasks usually under the supervision of nursing staff and provide the link between patients, physicians, nursing staff and other departments. Job duties and environments vary by place of employment. Some Hospital Unit Clerks are employed part-time or work evening or weekend shifts.

The Diploma of Phytotherapy, the most comprehensive program of western herbal medicine available in either Canada or the United States, explores the medicinal uses of North American and European herbs in both traditional and contemporary practices.

The Diploma of Holistic Nutrition is a 3-year (6-semester) program that explores the use of food to maintain health and to treat illness. This, the most comprehensive on-site program of holistic nutrition in Canada, is comprised of both theoretical and practical courses and includes cooking and clinical coursework.

Pharmacy Assistants usually perform routine tasks to help prepare prescribed medication, such as counting tablets and labelling bottles. They also perform administrative duties, such as answering phones, stocking shelves, and operating cash registers. Pharmacy Assistants refer any questions regarding prescriptions, drug information, or health matters to a pharmacist. CPR, First Aid and WHMIS will be completed during the program.

Students will gain knowledge in Medical Terminology, billing procedures, appointment booking & scheduling, transcription prioritizing & organizational skills and communication skills. This knowledge will be taught within the modules in the Medical Office Assistant Program.
