11 Design Degree Programs in Japan

This program is intended to help you learn architecture design that at the same time facilitates functionality and durability. This curriculum, based on environmental studies, enables you to acquire skills to design and construct structures and landscapes that are friendly to human beings and the natural environments. The curriculum is appropriate for people aspiring to become architects and designers and people hoping to be involved in environmental design. Our curriculum includes many subjects, such as Nature and Cities, Wooden Architecture Design, Housing Studies, Structure Design, Interior Planning and Construction Total Design.

Kyoto, where our university is located, has two faces; it is at once traditional and avant-garde. Our Faculty of Art and Design covers almost all areas, including the fields of fine art, contemporary art, graphic design, animation, manga, film, fashion design, jewelry design, interior design, architecture, landscape architecture, theater, and literature. In addition, we offer research programs in fields such as art production and historical heritage.

Students learn how to enhance the role of design in a broad range of fields, based on academic knowledge of history, culture, and technology. Students learn to research and propose product designs to improve quality of life-based on the perspectives of practical use and people-centered design. Students engage visual, aural, and physical senses through the use of digital media, to create an original, value-added design. Students learn how to realize a sustainable society based on the study of urban and landscape planning. Students learn how to create new relationships between people and the environment by studying design thinking in diverse fields. Students learn how to create original new designs appropriate for modern society through an understanding of the basic skills of traditional architecture and craftwork.

While keeping in mind the basic principles of design, we are creating an environment where students can think about their expressions, meanings, and suggestions in response to the ever-changing times. In addition to working on the desk, we propose deliverables that can be actually used through practical tasks linked to local Tochigi. Looking to the future, we aim to allow each student to voluntarily engage in the field of manufacturing and design while making the most of their individuality.

In the Graduate School of Design, we educate students and research on the various issues that are indwelling in the regional society. Through education and research, we aim to foster a professional who has advanced knowledge and is an expert in design. Our graduate students will be high-leveled specialists, researchers and educators who will contribute to the welfare of regional society by promoting industry, developing art and culture, restructuring and activating the community.

We have an entrance examination system and research and education system that allow admission every six months. We will increase learning opportunities by conducting enrollment selection that is easy for professionals and general members of society to take on challenges.

How machines can work in harmony with people? Harmony between people and the environment, and not just the creation of “things,” will be required of manufacturing in the future. From this viewpoint, students in our machine design course will learn through hands-on experience the basics of designing and manufacturing by acquiring the necessary knowledge and techniques related to machine elements, mechanical mechanics, material engineering, and machining processes. We aim for engineers who can form ideas that meet the needs of society.

In addition to acquiring a wide range of education necessary to understand the formation and issues of the local community, we will visit various sites in collaboration with the local community and deepen learning while experiencing it. Furthermore, while majoring in specialized fields such as public policy, local autonomy, economy, nature, culture, eating habits, tourism, social welfare, social education, and NPO, we will cultivate regional design abilities that apply these to the 21st century. We will develop human resources who can take the lead in government agencies, private companies, NPOs, etc. as leaders of the local community.

You will learn from the basics to practice the two elements of "wrapping" people, "clothing" and "living", "communication/information" that connects with people, "community/business" and "home economics education" that are the stage for playing an active part in society. You are free to choose what to combine and learn. You will be able to excite yourself and others' lives and acquire the power to create "more comfortable, more comfortable, more beautiful, and more enjoyable".

Under the guidance of multiple instructors from different areas of expertise, students acquire multi-faceted viewpoints, further deepening their awareness of research standards, all of which connect with writing their doctoral thesis.
