Study a Dance Degree

It addresses dance, movement and related practices as Intangible Cultural Heritage (ICH) from the perspectives of Ethnochoreology, the Anthropology of Dance, Sport and Movement, Heritage Studies, and Technology for Dance and Sport. It focuses on fieldwork and engages with movement analysis, motion capture, ethnographic and documentation techniques. 

This part-time 2-year innovative Joint Degree Master Choreography is run jointly by Codarts University of the Arts in Rotterdam and Fontys Academy of the Arts in Tilburg. The program is designed to support experienced movement makers from a variety of fields while they carry out research into questions initiated from their current practice.

The Associate in Arts in Dance degree will prepare students for transfer into a four-year dance major, minor or performing arts program. It can also prepare students for further study in other dance-related fields including performing, dance teaching, choreography, dance science, dance therapy, dance history or dance criticism. Upon completion of the degree students should be proficient in three or more dance technique styles at the intermediate level, have a firm understanding of dance appreciation and music theory, and be competent in creating and performing dance.

The Bachelor of Performing Arts degree requires three years of full-time study and offers specialisations in the combined study of music, theatre and dance.

The diploma in Performing Arts offers a well-rounded program focused on developing students’ skills in various aspects of performance. It covers areas like acting, dance, and voice training, helping students build a solid foundation in their chosen field.

The Associate in Arts in Dance is designed to prepare students to demonstrate competence and discipline in the study of dance technique, performance, and choreography and to demonstrate proficiency in group choreography and solo dance skills. Completing this curriculum will demonstrate commitment to the serious study of Dance in technique and choreography and provide comprehensive preparation for upper-division work. Careers for dance graduates typically include performing, teaching, art administration, choreography, dance therapy, and health and fitness specialists.

The Department of Dance offers an Associate Arts Degree in Dance that provides an extensive curriculum in dance theory and hands-on technical and experiential practice in the context of a broader education within the Liberal Arts. Our dance courses meet CSU/UC transfer requirements.

The Theatre Arts Option offers courses in the field of acting and directing, design and technical theatre, theatre history, dramatic literature, speech, and drama for the classroom. The Dance Option offers courses in the fields of ballet, modern, jazz, and tap; dances of world cultures to include Hip Hop, Ballroom, Middle Eastern Dance, African Dance, and Latin Social Dance; choreography; dance history; and dance production. Course requirements for theatre and dance in the major and minor programs provide for flexibility and allow students considerable choice in planning their academic careers.

If you're considering a career in the performing arts, this combination of dance and drama is both artistic and practical. You'll be encouraged to develop your own identity in dance and as a theatre-maker, reflecting your own interests and career pathway. To prepare you for working in the performance industry, you'll develop analytical, choreographic, directorial, ensemble and performance skills.

At Fontys Dance Arts in Context, we teach you to create, think, and produce with your fellow students, and to place dance in different contexts. The programme offers three different profiles: Contemporary, Contemporary Urban, and Choreography. Here, you are encouraged to develop your artistic profile, both as a creator, and dancer.

No matter what your dance experience and background are, this course enables you to experiment and explore your creative potential, preparing you for a career in the dance or creative arts industries.

Our program will help you develop professional practice skills, grow in your understanding and appreciation of dance as an art form, and pursue dance as a possible career choice. Essentially, we offer a conservatory approach to studying dance in a liberal arts setting, combined with professional-caliber performance opportunities.

The Dance Program offers practical courses in Ballet, Modern, Jazz/Hip-Hop, Tap, Strength and Stretch / Pilates, Barre, and Choreography/Performance Production. Dance students who choose to be more involved have additional opportunities to choreograph, perform, and attend conferences such as the annual American College Dance Association conference and other outreach projects on campus and in the community.

The BFA in Dance is a performance-oriented contemporary dance program designed to prepare students professionally as performers, choreographers, educators, and active leaders of the dance community. Students in this program demonstrate technical mastery and devote their college studies to an intensive and comprehensive dance curriculum.

Dance Artist, the ArtEZ modern and contemporary dance course, trains you to become a dance artist with your own position in the work field. In this age, it is more important than ever for a dance artist to be firmly based in a dance world that is always developing. At the top Dance Artist course at ArtEZ, you are trained as a (co)creating dancer and maker. Key to this is the development and embodiment of your own (artistic) identity as a dance artist.

Within the context of contemporary movement practice, our postgraduate dance program is designed to build your knowledge and skills of creative dance practices and will appeal to entrepreneurial dance artists who are keen to develop their practice. We offer a range of creative opportunities to enhance your studies. Alongside guidance from your tutors, our Master’s Dance degree is supported by several high-profile associations with artists and industry specialists to enhance your study experience.

The Master’s Programme in Dance Pedagogy at HAMU is a three-year, full-time course taught in English, designed for graduates seeking advanced professional and methodological expertise in dance education. The programme allows students to specialise in one of three pathways: Methods of Classical Ballet Technique, Methods of Modern and Contemporary Dance, or Methods of Folk Dance.
