The minor in International Studies requires 15 credit hours of coursework, nine hours of which must be advanced courses at the 3000 level and above. The first nine credit hours (three courses) must be chosen from the Core Courses. The next six credit hours (two courses) must be chosen from "The Global Perspective." A co-curricular requirement is one year of college-level study or equivalent of a world language. Note: Latin does not count as a second language. Courses taken in language study do not count toward the 15 credit hours of required coursework.

The Biochemistry Program at SMU offers courses leading to a Bachelor of Science degree in Biochemistry. This program reflects the interdisciplinary nature of modern biochemistry, and includes courses in physics, mathematics, chemistry and biology. Undergraduate research is also highly recommended. These courses will prepare students for entrance to professional schools such as medicine, or for graduate study leading to a Ph.D.

The Health & Society Major is an interdisciplinary program for students interested in the practice and study of health in global and cultural contexts. The major includes courses spanning lab, behavioral, and social sciences, an ethics component, as well as a capstone course or project. The foundation courses include introductory, intermediate, and advanced level classes where students in this major come together in shared experience.

The minor in advertising offers the student a cogent overview of the social, economic, legal and marketing environments in which advertising functions. Courses offered in the minor are designed to satisfy the needs of the consumer of advertising messages, as well as those of a person who might choose advertising as a valuable adjunct to another career choice.

Art History trains us to think critically and engage aesthetically with a world saturated by images. At SMU, students take an expansive range of Art History classes on topics spanning from ancient Mesopotamia to Afro-Futurism. The major works of the traditional Art History canon are taught – from the soaring architecture and marble sculpture of the Athenian Parthenon to Impressionist-style paintings such as Water Lilies by Claude Monet – alongside a robust slate of courses that challenge the centrality of that canon by deeply considering world regions, subaltern communities and forms of visual culture (figurines, clothing, maps, scientific diagrams, masquerade performances, video games, etc.) that are traditionally overlooked. SMU is one of only two universities in the United States with fully developed curriculum on South American and Central American art from the ancient to the contemporary periods. Interdisciplinary and intercultural connections are central to our courses, which overlap with disciplines as diverse as human rights, dance, film, literature, advertising, science and engineering.

The B.S. program requires a minimum of fifty (50) credit hours. Students build upon the same (26 credit hour) core program as the B.A. but with several additions. B.S. students will also take ANTH 5334 or 5335 (History of Anthropology I or II), STAT 2331 (Introduction to Statistics), three (3) credits in advanced statistics or data analysis, six (6) credits in advanced social or natural science, and nine (9) elective credit hours for the B.S., at least three (3) elective credit hours must be from the 4000-level or higher.

The Division of Corporate Communication and Public Affairs prepares majors to be leaders in business, government and civil society. We provide internship, consulting and applied research opportunities with world-class corporate, nonprofit and political organizations in Dallas, Washington, D.C., London and points beyond. We prepare majors for the leadership path to chief communication officer, executive director, founder, entrepreneur and more.

The specialization in energy management is designed to complement the student’s major in preparing them for careers in energy and natural resource companies, power generation companies, financial institutions, government, and non-profit groups. Students will develop a real-world foundation in the areas of industry structure and operations, energy economics and financial analysis, energy and natural resource law, and the role of global energy markets and policy. The curriculum reflects the current global energy mix, focusing primarily on hydrocarbons, but reflects the growing role of renewables in the years to come.

The English Department offers a creative writing specialization within the English major. All students pursuing this version of the major should speak with the director. Students pursuing a creative writing specialization within the English Department must fulfill all departmental requirements for the major.

Finance is the study of the management of financial resources, including the internal management of funds within the modern corporation, the external evaluation of securities and loans, the study of financial markets, and international finance. Graduates pursue employment in the areas of corporate finance, investment banking, investment analysis and portfolio management, and bank management.

The minor in art is designed to give a coherent structure to a brief but serious investigation of studio art. In this minor, students should grow to understand the formation of visual imagery and gain confidence in studio practice. The minor is designed for students who wish to incorporate more intensive visual studio training with studies in other areas, such as art history or advertising, or for those who want a basic studio curriculum.

Students completing 18 hours in photographic study can expect to obtain a sophisticated understanding of the photographically derived image and the technical and creative skills necessary for its production. Classes in photography offered by the Division of Art integrate the technical aspects of the medium with the aesthetic concerns appropriate to art. Through the use of photography, students learn to think and express themselves visually. A minor in photography prepares one for further work in fine arts or commercial photography and other areas where knowledge of photography is helpful. Beyond vocational applications, a minor in photography creates a firm foundation for future creative development.

This major is new to the Cox undergraduate program beginning Fall 2020. It combines a skill-based business analytics component with a functional supply chain management curriculum focused on business operations and cost-efficient processes, production, and distribution. Graduates will understand how to interpret data, build models, and apply algorithms to solve business problems.
