The Africana Studies Program brings a global outlook to the study of Africa and its Diasporas. Africana Studies extends far beyond the classroom. Students participate in study abroad programs in Ghana, Zimbabwe, Senegal, and Capetown, and take praxis courses to engage in experiential learning in communities closer to home. Their projects often develop into critical and ongoing resources for the whole college community, such as the Black at Bryn Mawr digital archive and A Point of Difference, an exhibit on the experiences of Bryn Mawr students, faculty, and staff from Africa and the African Diaspora.

Computer Science consists of the science of algorithms as well as the design and implementation of computer systems. The Computer Science program at Bryn Mawr is founded on the belief that computer science should transcend from being a subfield of mathematics and engineering and play a broader role in all forms of human inquiry. The department is supported jointly by faculty at both Bryn Mawr and Haverford Colleges.

The music curriculum is designed to deepen students’ understanding of musical form and expression through the development of skill in composition and performance joined with analysis of musical works and their place in various cultures. Bryn Mawr College's partnership with Haverford College allows students to major or minor in Music and take Music courses at Haverford.

The Dance Program offers a rich array of dance experiences for the many and diverse students who choose Bryn Mawr and Haverford Colleges. It welcomes the newcomer as well as supports the continuing progress of trained dancers. The program includes a range of technique courses in different styles and genres of dance, multiple performance ensembles, courses in composition and choreography, and dance studies courses that introduce students to dance as an exciting area of research and inquiry.

In the Fine Arts Department, the focus is on the individual. Studio classes are small, and students from beginners to majors receive individual instruction. Bryn Mawr College's partnership with Haverford College allows students to major in Fine Arts and take Fine Arts courses at Haverford. The philosophy of the Fine Arts Department centers on the concept that observational skills are the cornerstone of all visual art disciplines.

The goal of the Interdisciplinary Visual Studies Minor is to create a dynamic model for critical and creative engagement with visual experience across media, time, and cultures. Bryn Mawr College's partnership with Haverford College allows students to minor in Visual Studies and take Visual Studies courses at Haverford. Integral to an evolving global world is a reliance on new and old visual modes from social media, photography, moving images and complex data sets, to illuminated manuscripts and hybrid art forms.

The Museum Studies program provides a rich and dynamic education in both museum theory and practice. This dynamic and interdisciplinary program connects courses from disciplines such as History of Art, Anthropology, Archaeology, History, Cities, Biology, and Geology. Students learn about the history of museums and their roles in society, and they engage with critical, theoretical museum scholarship. Through coursework and internships, students also have the opportunity to gain practical, hands-on experience in the Bryn Mawr Special Collections as well as in museums, galleries, and archives in Philadelphia and beyond.

History at Bryn Mawr is about questioning and explaining how the past has been constructed, understood, and made into what we call "history." Our courses challenge students to actively participate in interpreting and making history, rather than merely reading and reflecting about the past. A primary aim of the Department of History is to deepen students' sense of time as a factor in cultural diversity and change. Our program of study offers students the opportunity to experience the past through attention to long-range questions, comparative history, and complex causation.

Philosophy explores the basic features of lives that often go unexamined. Plato’s Socrates famously said that the unexamined life is not worth living. The Bryn Mawr Department of Philosophy introduces students to some of the most compelling responses, both historical and contemporary, to questions of human existence and knowledge. Philosophy students are prepared for a variety of fields which require analysis, conceptual precision, argumentative skill, and clarity of thought and expression. Our students go on to careers in a wide variety of fields, including law, education, social services, the health professions, and administration.

Economics is a social science that studies the allocation of scarce resources as a means to better understand many kinds of human interaction. Economics offers both a major and a minor. The economics major at Bryn Mawr is designated as a STEM major, providing additional employment opportunities for F-1 students after graduation. Economics appeals to students with interests in social studies, geography, ecology, physics, politics, social justice, logic, and applied mathematics among other fields. Most majors like the combination of logical and mathematical rigor with the policy orientation of the field.

The Peace, Conflict, and Social Justice Studies concentration reflects Bryn Mawr’s and Haverford’s interest in the study of conflicts, peacemaking, and social justice as well as related issues of human rights. Through this program students can explore these phenomena through courses in the social sciences, such as anthropology, economics, education, history, political science, social psychology, and sociology, that are built around such foci, as well as through courses in the humanities and natural sciences through which issues of peace, conflict, social justice, and/or human rights can be highlighted and traced.

The curriculum in History of Art immerses students in the study of visual culture.Structured by a set of evolving disciplinary concerns, students learn to interpret the visual through methodologies dedicated to the historical, the material, the critical, and the theoretical. Majors are encouraged to supplement courses taken in the department with History of Art courses offered at Swarthmore and the University of Pennsylvania. Majors are also encouraged to study abroad for a semester.

The Creative Writing Department offers a wide range of hybrid workshop/literatures courses in a wide variety of literary genres, from Short Fiction and Novel Writing to Poetry, Screenwriting, Young Adult Literature and Writing for Radio and Podcast, all in the interest of developing the skills necessary to becoming accomplished emerging writers. The Department of Literatures in English offers a wide range of courses in literatures of the English-speaking world, from medieval romances to contemporary novels and film. The department stresses critical analysis, incisive writing and speaking, and we encourage our students to take initiative and responsibility for the enterprise of interpretation. Students experiment with historical periods, genres, forms and methodologies that might be unfamiliar, while also developing expertise in areas of specific interest to them.
