The Middle East and North Africa (MENA) Studies major is an interdisciplinary program of study that offers students the opportunity to develop an understanding of the complex and dynamic historical, cultural, political, economic, linguistic, and religious issues in the region as well as their inherent interconnections. Courses draw on the expertise of faculty from a wide variety of disciplines and departments, including anthropology, history, literature (Arabic and French), music, politics, and religious studies. Courses should be chosen carefully, in close consultation with the student’s academic adviser and with regard to the resources of the Claremont Colleges. MENA Studies provides preparation for students considering careers in public policy, politics, education, social work, law, business, diplomacy, journalism, and scholarly research. The MENA Studies curriculum includes courses from all five Claremont Colleges.

Religious Studies is a cooperative program offered jointly by Claremont McKenna, Harvey Mudd, Pitzer, Pomona and Scripps Colleges. The program of study is designed to serve both as one focus of a liberal arts education and as a foundation for students planning to pursue the study of religion beyond the baccalaureate degree. Students may enroll in Religious Studies courses offered at any of the undergraduate colleges and advanced students may with permission, enroll in master’s-level courses in their area of specialization at Claremont Graduate University.

Religious Studies is a cooperative program offered jointly by Claremont McKenna, Harvey Mudd, Pitzer, Pomona, and Scripps Colleges. Scripps College participates with Claremont McKenna, Harvey Mudd, Pitzer, and Pomona Colleges in a 5-College collaboration that allows students to take advantage of a broad range of courses, facilities, and opportunities in the study of environmental issues.

Each year over 500 students across the Claremont Colleges enroll in thirty-nine courses offered by the Scripps Art faculty in: art theory, book arts, ceramics, digital art, drawing, painting, photography, printmaking, sculpture, and video. Courses are designed to integrate theory and practice, enabling students to express their knowledge through research and diverse creative forms that can foster and enhance social discourse. The Art Department offers a rich and distinctive program that prepares our majors to pursue graduate work and careers in art, media, education, and the non-profit sector.

The Italian Department at Scripps College, the only one at the Claremont Colleges, offers a full range of courses for students, providing a sequence of lower division classes which develop speaking, writing and reading skills, as well as introduce students to Italian literature and culture. Following these introductory courses, students are able to take a number of upper division classes in various areas of literature and about a number of topics. Italian courses are complemented and enriched by the presence of an Italian assistant who lives on campus and facilitates Italian conversation in a number of activities. Students also have the opportunity to study in Italy, in places like Milan, Rome, Florence, or Parma.

The Scripps College Department of English offers courses in British, American, and global Anglophone literatures. The major is designed to give students a comprehensive understanding of the history of English-language literature, a strong foundation in literary criticism and interpretation, and extensive instruction in written expression. We encourage students to pursue a broad array of approaches to the study of English: courses required for the major range across time periods and genres, and can include both theoretical and creative work. English majors can also take advantage of the resources offered by literature departments at the other Claremont Colleges.

Every Harvey Mudd student takes a minimum of eleven courses in humanities, social sciences, and the arts (HSA), and many choose to take more. Some students even complete a second major in one of the HSA fields. The HSA program requirements are highly flexible, affording students substantial choice in their course selections. Students can elect courses offered by the Harvey Mudd HSA department and at the other undergraduate institutions at The Claremont Colleges. Study abroad is common and easily fits within the HSA program requirements, as does work in music, the visual arts, and other creative endeavors.

Students with an interest in astronomy or in astrophysics may take courses in the astronomy program with the physics departments at Harvey Mudd College and Pomona College. As part of the astronomy program, the participating colleges maintain facilities at the Table Mountain Observatory, located about one hour from campus in the San Gabriel Mountains. Equipment includes a 40-inch telescope with a photometer, CCD camera, IR camera, and CCD spectrograph. No major in astronomy is available at The Claremont Colleges; normally interested students major in physics.

Departments of the other Claremont Colleges and CGU are designed to cultivate critical thinking and to introduce the student to the history of philosophy, its traditional problems and subject areas and its connections with related subjects. In addition to preparing students for graduate work in philosophy, philosophy courses are a natural complement to the study of a wide variety of other subjects and can be relevant to preparation for careers in law, medicine and a number of fields involving the natural and social sciences and the humanities.

The Intercollegiate Department of Asian American Studies of the Claremont Colleges (IDAAS) offers a rigorous, multidisciplinary major that emphasizes social justice, critical thinking, and innovative analysis of the history, society, and cultural production of Asians in the United States, within both multiracial American and transnational contexts. The curriculum provides students with a comprehensive grounding in a range of thematic, theoretical, and methodological approaches within Asian American Studies. The major integrates theory and practice through community work, and sustained and focused inquiry in the senior project or thesis. In consultation with an IDAAS adviser, students take core interdisciplinary courses in Asian American Studies and select appropriate courses in a range of disciplines throughout the five colleges.
