Students can pursue a professional teaching license to teach in K-12 schools in one of 21 different endorsement areas through our nationally accredited teacher education program; or they can pursue an interdisciplinary minor in education policy that prepares them for work in a variety of social and political arenas. All states require professional education courses for licensure to teach in public schools. Through the Rockbridge Teacher Education Consortium (RTEC), a collaborative teacher-preparation partnership between W&L and Southern Virginia University, students may earn a teaching license in elementary, middle or secondary education.

Blackburn offers teacher certification programs in Elementary Education, Secondary Education, Social Science, History, English, Mathematics, K-12 programs in Physical Education and Spanish, Special Education (K-21), and Early Childhood Education. Faculty members are committed to reflective practice, constructivist teaching, and preparing teacher candidates for a future in education. Classrooms utilize technology found in K-12 school districts, including interactive whiteboards, laptops, and tablets. Blackburn has a curriculum library containing textbooks, novels, and manipulatives to facilitate successful teaching experiences for students. Education students complete a minimum of 200 hours of practical classroom experience prior to student teaching. Students begin field experiences during their freshman year at Blackburn College. The Nunavut Teacher Education Program (NTEP) offers a campus and community-based program that prepares Nunavummiut to become classroom teachers in Nunavut schools. The emphasis is on training primary and elementary teachers, but students may choose to practice at the Junior High and High School levels. The program is focused on developing educators who are fluent in and able to learn and teach in Inuktitut. Applicants to NTEP should be proficient in Inuktitut. In Iqaluit, two steams of Inuktitut instruction are offered: Proficient & Emergent.

Students in majors other than Education complete the courses within the concentration and then will apply for an Education minor in the specialized area. The School of Education provides 8-12 teacher certification in Biology, Chemistry, English, Math and Social Studies and P-12 certification in Art, Health/Physical Education, Music, Learning Behavior Disorders and Spanish. The Education Professional Standards Board requires ongoing assessment of educator preparation candidates. Therefore, it is important that secondary education majors remain in close contact with their education advisors. The first candidate assessment point, called CAP 1, is intent to major in the educator preparation program. CAP 2 is admission to the program and approval is required to take ED 414. All CAP requirements are described earlier in this section.
