11 Social Science Course Programs

The study of Social Studies contributes to the important goal of preparing students for their lives as Canadian citizens and members of the international community. Through participation in Social Studies, students are encouraged to: Develop an appreciation of democracy and what it means to be Canadian. Demonstrate respect for human equality and cultural diversity.

The aim of social studies is to develop thoughtful, responsible, active citizens who are able to consider multiple perspectives and to make reasoned judgments. The Social Studies 11 curriculum provides students with opportunities to reflect critically upon events and issues in order to examine the present, make connections with the past, and consider the future.

Every Harvey Mudd student takes a minimum of eleven courses in humanities, social sciences, and the arts (HSA), and many choose to take more. Some students even complete a second major in one of the HSA fields. The HSA program requirements are highly flexible, affording students substantial choice in their course selections. Students can elect courses offered by the Harvey Mudd HSA department and at the other undergraduate institutions at The Claremont Colleges. Study abroad is common and easily fits within the HSA program requirements, as does work in music, the visual arts, and other creative endeavors.

The Social Sciences Degree offers multidisciplinary and international training leading to masters of excellence from Dauphine - PSL and PSL. It is based on learning quantitative and qualitative methods around two years of common core training and different specializations in the 3rd year of the degree: Sociology and Political Science, Public Action, Economics. Master the range of qualitative and quantitative methods in the social sciences.

The M.S. in Quantitative Methods in the Social Sciences at the Graduate Center prepares students from a variety of backgrounds for a data-driven future. Data analysis is driving research and decision-making in every social science field and sector. Doctoral Training Alliance Social Policy is interdisciplinary in its approach, bringing together criminologists, sociologists, social care and social policy experts in response to a range of societal challenges.

Developing service systems to address emerging social problems such as homelessness, substance use, and issues within the American criminal justice system.

The Black Studies program at Cabrini evolved out of the mission to “welcome learners of all faiths, cultures, and backgrounds,” and it is a response to student requests for coursework on the African Diaspora. The minor expands the College’s capacity to offer a more inclusive curriculum that connects with the intellectual and cultural heritage of people of African descent. In this program, the study of the traditions and experiences of Africans in the New and Old Worlds is rooted in the social sciences, art, literature, and the humanities.
