If you are considering pursuing teacher licensure while an undergraduate at Mount Holyoke you will need to contact the Five College Teacher Licensure Coordinator for an appointment (preferably by the middle of your sophomore year), to review your options, the licensure requirements, and application procedures for acceptance into the licensure program of your choice. As a candidates for any of Mount Holyoke’s teacher education programs, you must complete a sequence of courses in the Psychology and Education Department prior to the spring semester of your senior year. The spring semester of your senior year will be devoted almost entirely to the practicum, which is a full-time student teaching assignment in an area school.

There is no requirement to have studied Psychology before but students are expected to have at least an A grade in English Language GCSE (Or equivalent). The examination papers are designed to test the interpretation and explanation of psychological theories, therefore a high level of English language skills is required.

This A Level Psychology course has been designed to provide a broad introduction to the scope and nature of psychology as a science. This course covers the brand new spec introduced in September 2015. The emphasis is on applying knowledge and understanding rather than just acquiring knowledge, thereby developing students’ transferable skills of analysis, evaluation and critical thinking.

The program in psychology examines contemporary perspectives on principles of human behavior in areas ranging from cognition, development, and behavioral neuroscience to interpersonal relations and psychopathology. Its approach emphasizes scientific methods of inquiry and analysis.

A major in psychology provides training in the scientific analysis of human thought and behavior, their expression and their development. The Scripps program emphasizes understanding human actions and reactions—mental or psychological processes—through experiences such as observation, participation, and experimental investigation. Students are afforded opportunities to gain experience through field placement at nearby institutions and through collaboration with ongoing faculty research projects. Such projects include studies of human development over the life span from childhood through adolescence to old age; the role of culture in psychological development; and the influence of others on one’s thoughts, feelings, and/or behaviors.

Psychology allows you to study the human mind, human behaviour and human experience from a scientific perspective - helping you understand what makes us who we are, and what makes people 'tick'. You can then apply and use this knowledge to address social and personal problems.

Psychology and neuroscience serve as pathways to understanding human perceptions, motivations, attitudes and behaviors. Take a scientific approach to address topics such as physiology, cognitive function, social influence, organizational behavior, mental disorders and treatment. By delving into the complexities and processes of the mind, you will benefit from your ability to apply your understanding of human behavior to any career you choose.

To know a thing well, you should know its history. Unfortunately, the history of psychology is often obscure, and what is written in textbooks tends to be a simplified, if not distorted, version of events. To understand what really happened, we need to go back to the primary sources, and see what people thought, what they said, and who they argued with. In this course, we'll start by reading several foundational books and papers.

The Applied Developmental Psychology (ADP) programs at the Pitt School of Education emphasize the correlation between research and practice in the promotion of positive outcomes in human development for children, youth, and families.
