Professional Communication: Business Writing and Storytelling is an online short course from The Economist designed to help business professionals attract and address broad audiences across various written formats. Based on the newspaper’s editorial practice, this six-week course offers a self-reflective journey through the craft and purpose of writing and storytelling, equipping you with the confidence to communicate with partners and employees. An accessible “tools not rules” approach to grammar unlocks practical skills for constructing cohesive sentences and paragraphs and shows how elements such as word choice, punctuation, and structure can maximize impact and clarity. You’ll also explore ways to source information accurately, learn to strengthen arguments with data visualisations and uncover methods for constructive and collaborative editing.

Goucher’s professional writing minor features different disciplines in professional writing, including creative nonfiction and journalism, as well as business, professional, and technical writing. Our courses prepare students to navigate professional workplace situations by developing rhetorical skills to write and compose in different genres. Students learn to recognize and reach the many different audiences they will encounter in professional and public contexts.

The Writing Studies minor is a home for students who believe that writing can be an integral part of their personal, professional, and academic success. Writing Studies is a research-based, interdisciplinary field that includes the study of digital media, professional and technical writing, academic, civic, and cultural rhetorics, and the theory and practice of writing pedagogy. 

The Rhetoric, Writing, and Public Discourse major at Whitman College will sharpen your communication and critical thinking skills and give you tools for social change. You’ll learn to make persuasive arguments, speak confidently in public and understand power dynamics. These communication skills will enhance your Whitman coursework and open up real-world opportunities, such as internships and careers in activism, politics, communications, social media and more.

At the end of this training, participants will be able to make their writing short, clear and impactful; present their ideas in ways that inspire the reader to action; to adapt their style and vocabulary to the recipients.

This course is designed for science students developing their research skills working on research projects for a principal investigator; specifically, this course will improve the students’ writing ability and introduce them to writing for the scientific community.

The Postgraduate Preparation Programme (PPP) is a one trimester, non-award programme for students who have a tertiary qualification but who do not qualify for direct entry into a Master Degree at Curtin University. Completion of the PPP ensures students direct entry into the Curtin College Graduate Certificate programme. The PPP consist of 4 pre-postgraduate units that focus on academic communication, intercultural issues and introductory research skills in preparation for postgraduate studies.

At the end of this training, participants will be able to write a structured presentation; define the objectives and the target audience to build the common thread of their presentation; to practice presenting with the techniques of the actor to manage and convince their audience.
