Students will be exposed to the educational contexts of arts and culture and will explore some of the key discourses in Dance, including Dance and Cultural formation, History and Aesthetics. The Barnard College Department of Dance, located in a world dance capital, offers an interdisciplinary program that integrates the study of dance within a liberal arts setting of intellectual and creative exploration. The major builds upon studio courses, the Department's productions at Miller Theater, New York Live Arts and other venues, as well as a rich array of dance studies courses, allowing students' creative work to develop in dialogue with critical inquiry into the history, culture, theory and forms of western and non-western performance, typically enhanced by study in other disciplines.

The Department of Theater and Dance is committed to engaging students in creative practice and scholarly study across the disciplines of theater and dance. Students in our courses are encouraged to explore the cross-disciplinary connections between these two performing arts; to link theory with practice; and to situate theater and dance as vital components in cultural, social, and political processes with both global and historical reach. The Department exposes students to a wide range of studio techniques and approaches in order to enhance their skills as performers and to provide them with the necessary resources for the creation of new work. Above all, the Department values experimentation in both artistic practice and intellectual inquiry, and seeks to nurture student artists capable of expressing their ideas and their passions with clarity and purpose.

Dance is an interdisciplinary art form that involves elements of theatre, music, design and the visual arts in a variety of cultural contexts. Instruction is available to students who wish to study dance as one of the liberal arts, as well as to those who aspire to professional careers in dance performance or related fields. The Dance Program challenges students to develop concentration skills, observational and analytical abilities and capacities for working with broad aesthetic concepts and fine details while developing their creative instincts. Solid foundations in modern, ballet, composition and repertory are designed to build strong technique and a sense of artistic expression, while exposure to non-Western dance forms encourages students to better understand other cultures through their performance traditions.

Rehearse for your life. Studying theater and dance prepares performers, directors, choreographers, designers, researchers, technicians, and playwrights for careers in the arts, but that’s not all. By taking our courses and working closely with classmates on all aspects of productions, students also learn valuable skills of collaboration, teamwork, listening, and observation that can be applied to many different careers and professions.

You can declare a minor in dance to complement a major in any other area of study. All dance courses also satisfy General Education requirements at Curry. The combination of a dance minor with a major in public health and wellness, psychology, graphic design, studio arts, or business administration, for example, may lead to graduate study and/or careers in such fields as dance/health education, expressive therapies, or arts administration.

The Dance Performance and Choreography program prepares students for a professional performance or creative career in dance. The only B.F.A. Dance and Choreography program in Central Florida, FSC Dance students receive 21st century dance training with a focus on technical training, creative exploration, choreographic skills, theoretical coursework, and the flexibility to shape your experiences to match your career goals. At FSC you will develop your physical skills with classes in ballet, modern, and jazz dance techniques while also developing your “voice” as an artist through choreography courses. The program features a unique and intensive course of study designed provide the knowledge, experience and professional exposure you need to build a successful career as a dancer, choreographer or graduate student. Not only through challenging physical dance classes, but also anatomical and somatic practices to prepare you for a long and healthy career in dance.

Dance is an exploration of how the body speaks. We offer a comprehensive curriculum with learning goals that emphasize technical training, creative experimentation, and critical/theoretical understanding. As a dance student you will investigate physical, cultural and aesthetic principles of dance and embody the skillful practice of different dance traditions. This two-year course is equivalent to 3 A Levels and is designed to help you extend your understanding of the performing arts, develop your performing skills and learn new ones in our purpose-built performance spaces. It combines practical assignments and the study of variety of performance arts disciplines. You will work on production projects and be involved from backstage to front-of-house.

The Department of Theater and Dance offers a major in theater and dance that integrates studio technique, history and theory, and original creative work within the performance and study of theater and dance. Students may major in theater and dance with a concentration in either theater, dance, or interdisciplinary performance. Students may also choose to minor in theater or dance.
