Visual Communication II

Visual Communication II is a compulsory course in the study programme Bachelorโs in Design, Art and Crafts, and is a 200-level course. Students must include a 200-level course, KOH203 or KOH204, as part of their bachelor degree. The course is also available for international exchange students. The course builds on the academic level provided by the course KOH131 Visual Communication, and develops a deeper insight into and understanding of visual communication.

Through the course, the students will immerse themselves in an animation technique of their choice: 2D, stop-motion or 3D computer animation. The subject mainly consists of group work where the task is to make a short film using the self-wading technique. The students first develop an idea and production plan, before starting the production itself. Through the work with the film production, which will be guided by subject teachers, the students will receive in-depth training in the animation technique they have chosen. There will be teaching sessions to support this training.

Figure drawing provides an introduction to basic knowledge of human proportion, anatomy, movement and composition. The main goal of the course is to provide students with knowledge of, and practice in, drawing based on principles of linear construction. The understanding of linear construction prepares the students for more complex problems in Figure drawing 2 and 3. The course consists of lectures and practical excersises with guidance.

Animation Production

The student shall make at least one minute of completed animation in a chosen technique or a combination of techniques. A shorter project may be accepted if it is made in classic 2D animation. No complete narrative is required, but the student shall through the work show skills and knowledge beyond a basic level in the chosen animation technique. The student takes part in an animation project related to the animation industry. It might be an advertising film, music video, a title sequence, a pilot for a program/series etc. The project can be made within the school or with an external producer/studio or as part of international exchange at an education partner abroad. The project must be accepted by the teacher in charge.

The starting point is the communication challenges that state institutions and private businesses face when citizens and customer groups make demands for social responsibility in areas that concern the environment, human rights and social conditions. In a global and culturally pluralistic market, conflicts based on such questions will become more common. Problems related to reputation will and will be dealt with.

The course first addresses the contemporary media development and how different media converge. Then it discusses how this development influences the media professions and production practice. Through drawing exercises with guidance and lectures, the goal is to develop observational skills and advanced problem solving in drawing. The student should learn how to apply knowledge from drawing classes to work in animation and other artistic fiields. For english speaking exchange students: Admission for exchange students is based exclusively on portfolio assessment. All exchange students must submit a link to their online portfolio, together with the application documents.

The course provides an introduction to the physical and optical laws behind photographic image production, with practical exercises designed to explore the problems and benefits connected to these facts. The course also explores; in theory and through practical exercises the fundamental rules regarding composition of visual elements and the communicative effects of photographic images. In addition the course provides lectures in the history of photography and photo journalism, as well as basic ethics and law concerning the topic.Teaching is offered in the form of lectures, individual exercises and plenum discussions around submitted studentmade images and images produced by professional photographers; based on given criteria as found in literature on visual communication. Some lectures may take place at evening time and/or during weekends. VUC reserves non-commercial user rights to images submitted during the course.
