The Center for Middle East and North Africa Studies (CMENAS) at Binghamton University coordinates the study of the Middle East, North and Sudanic Africa, and European countries that have extensive Islamic contact. The Center develops and integrates research and graduate and undergraduate instruction about the MENA area.

The Israeli Studies minor provides students with the knowledge and multidisciplinary skills to examine Israeli history, politics, and culture. It serves students with a wide range of interests and backgrounds and complements majors in Anthropology, Arabic, Art History, Comparative Literature, Geography, History, Judaic Studies, Political Science, and Sociology. Students who are pre-law or pre-health, but interested in the humanities and social sciences will find a home in Israel Studies.

The Middle East studies concentration introduces students to the study of the diverse, culturally rich, and increasingly complex part of the world that currently includes the Arab world, Iran, Israel, and Turkey, recognizing the interconnectedness of peoples and cultures and locating their significance in wider global contexts. The concentration facilitates the interdisciplinary study of the Middle East, encouraging students to combine courses in sociology/anthropology, religion, history, and political science, among other disciplines.

The Middle East and North Africa (MENA) Studies major is an interdisciplinary program of study that offers students the opportunity to develop an understanding of the complex and dynamic historical, cultural, political, economic, linguistic, and religious issues in the region as well as their inherent interconnections. Courses draw on the expertise of faculty from a wide variety of disciplines and departments, including anthropology, history, literature (Arabic and French), music, politics, and religious studies. Courses should be chosen carefully, in close consultation with the student’s academic adviser and with regard to the resources of the Claremont Colleges. MENA Studies provides preparation for students considering careers in public policy, politics, education, social work, law, business, diplomacy, journalism, and scholarly research. The MENA Studies curriculum includes courses from all five Claremont Colleges.

For centuries, and still today, the Middle East and North Africa have been the site of major civilizations that have attracted attention from afar. Bowdoin College’s program in Middle Eastern and North African studies oversees students’ interdisciplinary study of this region. Students minoring in Middle Eastern and North African studies take courses in a Middle Eastern language and in relevant courses in at least two other disciplines.

As a Middle Eastern Studies major or minor, you’ll explore the Middle East, Africa and South Asia from a global and cross-regional perspective. The interdisciplinary curriculum provides opportunities to develop complementary skills in fields such as anthropology, history, international relations, politics or religious studies.

East Asian Studies offers a rich and interdisciplinary exploration of the diverse cultures, histories, societies, and contemporary dynamics of the East Asian region. Encompassing countries such as China, Japan, Korea, and Taiwan, East Asia is renowned for its rich cultural heritage, ancient civilizations, vibrant traditions, and influential modern popular cultures. The field of East Asian Studies provides students with an opportunity to delve into these fascinating aspects through a variety of courses and research opportunities.

The Middle East and Islamic Studies (MEIS) program at Gettysburg College gives students a wide breadth of opportunities to pursue his or her interests on a most critical part of the world: home to our oldest civilizations, cradle to three great monotheistic religions, and a most vital and dynamic focus of current events. The minor reflects the need to understand more about this region, the peoples who live there, and the ways that Islam has shaped societies around the world. Students who choose to pursue a minor in MEIS will have many study abroad, internship, and career opportunities with the knowledge they learn here.

The Classical Mediterranean and Middle East Department at Macalester College studies the diverse cultures, civilizations, and histories of antiquity to better understand contemporary concerns. The study of antiquity values the lessons and experiences of those who lived before us, and encourages students to challenge and reframe their view of the past. Every student’s unique perspective aids in our understanding of what it means to be human throughout the centuries, and how we responsibly study history in the modern day.

When they consider what subject to take up at university, only a few students will think immediately of Chinese, Japanese, Hebrew or Arabic Studies. Yet there are many good reasons to do so. The languages themselves may be a little complicated, but they are fascinating, as are the histories, literature, politics, and cultures of the areas in which they are spoken.

Why study three countries about which you know little and may not be able to find on a map? In less than a century, Bohemia (now Czech Republic), Hungary, and Poland, which began as provinces of multiethnic empires, experienced independence, Nazi occupation, communist dictatorship, and independence again, as members of NATO and the European Union.

The content of this course deals with issues of race and power In this class we will study the history and relationship of Zionism and Palestinian nationalism. We will examine the origins of both movements and the history of their conflict. Significant attention be given to the conflict over Palestine which culminated in the Nakba and the establishment of Israel in 1948, as well as the decades of war, protest and occupation which followed.
